Hello Lee, Leath-aire is a fairly new material in which it is a new synthetic leather that is more durable and easier to clean while breathing better then leather so its not as hot or cold depending on the season. (Not bonded leather)

Hello Nicole, if your pet has sharp claws, no matter the material, it can still be scratched and ripped. But if your pet doesn't have sharp claws then it should be fine.
