I have a country home a hour away from city home. I only get to use house 4 to 6 days a month. In a bad winter might not go to all month. Sat night when I went up house had been robbed since last time I was up. This is 2nd time in about 8 years. They kicked in back door stole tools and TV. Police said area having big problems with heroin..Door was wired to ADT alarm, but I had gotten lazy and stopped setting. I would like to have camera both inside and out. I know nothing about cameras. please give advise on them. Thank you

Sorry this happened! Time to set the alarm without fail.

You can get a package deal with several cameras and a base unit that feeds power to the cameras, receives the video signals, and records it all on an internal disk drive like a DVR does. I got a setup with 4 cameras and base unit for $200 from Monoprice last month. Fairly easy to set up. There are wireless ones but the wired ones are cheaper and no batteries required for the cameras. The cameras are weather resistant, record in color and usually have infrared LEDs to invisibly light up things at night. You will have to conceal the cameras and base unit so they aren't stolen too. These units can connect to a regular TV for viewing or a laptop. They can be connected to the Internet to view your cameras remotely from a phone app, but you have to have internet service at the house for that. It's OK if you don't because they will record for days and weeks, discarding the oldest records when the disk gets full. If something happens you just retrieve the video.

Besides Monoprice another place with fairly good stuff is Parts Express.

I have ring, and nest looks good and is less expensive. I have the ring door bell and two cameras, one camera outside with the solar panel, one camera inside. They are powered by a rechargeable battery and connect to the Internet with wifi. I get notification on both my smart phone and iPad. The doorbell has two way audio, as well as video. I subscribe to cloud storage. The door bell with a chime was $250, each camera was $200, the solar panel was $50.

I was at Lowe's earlier this week and they were selling 3 pack of nest cameras for $500.

A couple of neighbors have ADT outdoor cameras, one neighbor paid $100 for his alarm system and outdoor camera, and pays about $40/month.

Are the cameras motion activated or just film nonstop?

Ring cameras use motion, including the doorbell.
