Cutting back figs roots?

I have a Black mission fig that I purchased last year. I am a renter so it stays potted now I have had to repott this fig twice over the summer and its becoming root bound again. Is it advisable to cut back the roots? I would like it to stay relitivly small as it is a house plant in the winter. I will be repotting again befor it gose dormant for the winter.
