Need help Living room makeover

last modified: 9 years ago

Im about to pull out all of my hair, I have returned 2 couches, multiple curtains and rugs, I just can't seem to get the decor right.

Here is what I have done that can't change:

1. painted walls a greige color

2. replaced floor with a greige plank tile.

3. tv mounted and art work not changing.

I originally was going for a beachy look but can't get it to look right, the blue curtains give the room a very blue tone to them.

Couches are that are there are not staying they are put in a similar pattern as to what the sectional I want will be placed. on the middle windows with the blue/brown/curtains (yes all mismatched lol) that is a long sliding door, I can't do too light of a color curtains or sheer because too much light and sun comes in, the house is not insulated and gets very hot and makes our a/c work harder so curtains do need to have a little thickness.

Im open to different color combos but I don't like brown. Im stumped as to what colors to use for the curtains and the rug, the sectional Im getting I dont have to use the throw pillows I can completely change those colors as well. so a complete blank slate and Im going nuts.

here are pics, sorry if Im doing this wrong, first time posting here

One picture with the red drawing is how the sectional will be placed with the chaise on the left side

there is also a nook area that I was going to put another small loveseat or seating area, don't know what to do with that space, its an odd shaped living room.

it will all work out :) so you can't move or remove the art next to the TV or the Octopus or fish? Will the sectional work OK with that post? are you committed to it?

I can move it, the ones next the tv I can its just such a small space there not sure what else to put. the ocotpus I can, my daughter painted it for me when I was going to do a beach room so I would hate to move it. the other fish on the opposite side my husband caught that fish and had it screen printed so i really like it. the tv cant be moved though.

here is what I tried before I had ordered this darker gray sectional that I ended up hating because it was too dark, and I tried it with multiple curtains but because the light is so bright coming in from those windows it washes the color out. I can' put blinds on the inside either becasue they are jalousie style windows that stick inwards and the blinds wont lay nicely, ughh its an older house and certain things drive me nuts.

ok here is some of the ways I had it, (already returned this couch haha

the curtains where these but barely show the color

    and with blue curtains

and how I had the nook set up which I thought was alright, not as much light shines in that one so it shows the color of the curtains more. this house has way too much windows in that small space

I can't really tell exactly what your windows look like but the room looks very curtain heavy wonder if some blinds might be better? Am sure you can get some that properly block out the sun. The curtains just seem to really enclose the room.

what are you doing with all the furniture in the pictures? It looks like quite new furniture?? I like the beige and blues

Yeah I tried vertical blinds on the sliding door and it didn't look good and I haven't found others that work with my jalousies, I want to replace the windows but all windows are off sizes and I can't just buy them off the shelf lol so frustraiting but yes sooooo many windows lol

I ordered double curtain rods to maybe try putting a different lighter color in the back rod and the darker color in the front. Ive wasted so much money on buying things that don't work, Ive bought so many throw pillows lol my kids keep saying stop buying pillows lol

and definitely stick with a beachy theme so you can keep all your art!

the art next to TV and the stuff on the top shelf of stand below TV I would remove - it looks a little cluttered and no need for art next to TV

I have that nook area that the beige couch can go back to, and I was going to order biege or linen color for the living room but I have lots of kids so not to practical doing light colors. the blue bench is for my photography studio I have to take it out but using it right now for seating. the small side chair I can get rid of lol so all furniture can actually be taken out, the only thing I want to keep is the white stand under the tv console.

I really like the look of the pics you sent I was going for the light airy look but again not sure how long the light color couches would last. also I haven't found a light color sectional I like here, furniture here is limited, Im in Hawaii so no go on ordering furniture online. I can order ashley furniture though the furniture store though.

Your daughter's art is so cute and should be lowered - looks high and wonder if it might work better in the nook area...think about what might be useful to you & your family for that area..a place to do crafts, work on computer, read a book, etc... a purpose for the area not just more seating.

so no knick knacks on the shlelf.

I have a bathroom that one of those doors lead to and did it a beach theme and I loved how it turned out and was trying to bring it into the living room but its not working out, I don't have to keep the art work i can change it to any color.

right now its messy because of the kids, this is what the shelf is supposed to look like when its clean lol

I think you will be able to use a lot of your pillows! I think that orange-coral colour and blue will be great! that new sectional you want looks more grey-ish?

what color curtains and rug should I pair it with?

I wonder if getting a couch (in gray-ish colour or blue - maybe even navy?) might be better than sectional? you can use that other chair (think it looks striped? which is good for beachy look) this will give you more flexibility on layout and seating ..then I think either plain curtains with patterned rug or plain-ish rug with patterned curtains. I'm not huge on rug in 2nd pic but shows good use of blue couch with patterned curtains

Am I understanding that you are getting rid of the couches and curtains and looking for ideas on furniture arrangement and placement? If I am understanding you correctly here are some ideas that I think would energize your space. I would replace your curtains with an illusion of more height. I would install an upholstered window box valance (they are quite easy to make and install) a grommet canvas drop cloth drape would also work. You need something chunkier for the window treatment. Bring your couch away from the wall and put a U shaped sectional or one with a chaise on the end 10 or so feet from the front of your TV. Another idea is to purchase a straight couch, place it in front of the TV with club chairs on either side. I would move the darling white cabinet to the window by your fish picture, put a lamp on it and position a chaise in that corner creating a reading nook. The pictures on each side of the TV I would hand vertically where the white couch is and place your flower arrangement just below. Is that a suitcase in the corner? I think it would look interesting to sit it on top of the aqua side table and use it at the end of your sofa. Underneath the TV I would place 2 round garden seats. Move your organ to the other wall at the end of the blue couch. It looks like that is an entrance to the bedroom blocked off by a curtain. I don't know what your budget is but a white sliding barn door there would look great and be functional as well. I apologize for the lengthy post. Just a few tweaks and you have a fabulous room.

I love the the 2nd pic but I don't think they have that color here. It's so stressful picking up a couch lol the kids love the sectional so trying to please them too, but I know the single pieces look nicer. Here are some other options I was looking at for furniture pieces

this is the matching sofa to the love seat I already have and it can be ordered ina a sofa bed which my kids like too

Theres this one, I love the color but not sure about being held to that color and not being able to change things up

If i do light gray sofa sofa or the cream color what color do I do with curtains, pillows and rug? Without being too matchy?

im going to go buy faux wood blinds and see if I can get that to work on the two windows behind the couch, now that we have ac we don't ever open the windows so I think it won't be in the way, maybe that will break up all the curtains and I won't have to have them closed and be over powering

So many ways to do beachy look! I was also thinking as Christy mentions to have curtains that add more height...something with a vertical pattern or stripe.

do you like the idea of a plain or patterned rug? single colour or a little more colourful?

I think that lighter greenish colour might not hold up as well with kids and you may bore of it quickly, what about something like this from Ashley? or you can't really go wrong with a grey-taupe-ish colour.

Christy, yes all furniture can go, so will curtains etc. the suitcase isn't staying lol its just plopped there. the hanging curtain is to our laundry room and yes I think its a good idea to get a sliding accordion door I have one at my studio and that would be good, the reason my house looks wierd from that angle is this is an extension, the area were it looks like an odd window and the laundry room door used to be the back of the old house and then it got enclosed, we bought it like this lol.

I plan on getting either a L shaped sectional with a chaise in the light gray color or purchase more of the same set that I have (the cream color love seat) I was going to get the sofa and another accent chair. need help with coloring everything. I just went to the store to get white faux woof blinds and was going to have my son help me install them and with our wacky windows I have no clue how to put them up, Im going to have to wait for my husband to see if he can rig something to set them up.

    Thanks for the input!

mzapper, I love both, plain and patterned with curtains and rugs lol thats why Im stumped I don't know what the actual ways of adding patterns together. you had posted a picture with normal royal blues and creams and I love those. Im very limited here on curtain and rug selection there aren't a lot of good stores that sell them like the mainland has

Barn & willow, yes I agree, right now its all mismatched because I bought a bunch of different ones to try lol I think there is 6 different colors/curtains up right now lol so I could see them, Im forever going to the store and buying one panel each to try. the only thing it gets very pricey to fill all the windows I need 6 panels for the regular windows and 4 panels for the sliding door, and the good quality curtains are about $30 and up, yikes lol. I didn't care for the look of white curtains up, it looks too bland I would like a little more color, but the suggestion from Mzapper of adding blinds so I don't see a complete wall of all curtains, Im defnitely going to try to see if I can get those blinds to work.

I really need help with choosing a color of couches and rugs and curtains to match them, without being too matchy. I love all shades of blues for accents and I like yellow, cream and white as well. I just need to know how to mix and match. My other problem is there isn't much to choose from here, and lots of times I can't order big stuff like area rugs online since they won;t ship here and curtains are hard to buy online because you can't really see the type of fabric.

I guess what I really need is what you think I can do with these two sets, this is what I have narrowed it down to, I need to work, colors of curtains, throw pillows (the pillows on the beige couch I dont like) the one on the gray I can either keep or not.

I think white sheers across all windows would look great. JCP usually has some affordable ones, and often has sales. If you wanted a pattern or color, I would frame the window with that, but with a blackout liner so light wouldn't wash through it. Good luck!

are there particular websites you shop from? I think you can make either couch or sectional work
