have you thought about changing the hardware? it would look more interesting if you glassed the tall doors of the cabinet you feature in your photo. What color is your counter?? you need to supply a better photo of the room and the surrounding rooms...it is impossible to suggest paint color and such without having that knowlege... then supply the style you like...i.e. modern...classic...aged...historic...etc. the flooring can't be seen in your pic...nor the back splash area.... love to help but need more info.

Backsplash or new hardware is what I would do. Maybe add bright wallpaper to help?

Old cabinets can be valuble depending on how old they are. There are lots of options, painting old wood can be difficult. I recomend Zinnser (shellac based) as your first coat. If I could see pics of your kitchen it would help.
