Layout Help!

I'm getting ready to renovate our completely dysfunctional, small kitchen. We're planning on DIYing it using IKEA cabinets. I'm not including current location of electrical/plumbing since we're planning on moving things around to improve the layout.

It's just my husband and I. I do most of the "cooking", but he helps with prep and cleaning, so we need space for both of us. I really like to cook, so the kitchen will be heavily used.

I'm including the current floorplan as well as how we're thinking of changing it (moving a wall about 2' into the dinning room). I've considered removing the wall between the kitchen and dinning room, but have decided against it because 1) it's load bearing, and more importantly 2) I don't like the dinning room being open to the kitchen, but would be willing to rethink it if it means maximizing the space.

Also including the plan I made on the IKEA planner. Of note, cabinet 6 is a dishwasher (not ideal being located right beside the range, but I couldn't figure out a better location)

Open to all suggestions!

You have very little prep space between the sink and range. Have you considered putting the sink and DW on the wall against the stairs, and prepping in front of the window?

    Or, vice versa:

I hadn't considered moving the sink. I like the idea of one big prep area between the sink and the range. The only thing is I feel like I'd lose most of the upper cabinet storage with that option no?

I'd trade a little upper storage for a functional layout any day!

Here's your proposed layout, so we don't need to click on the link each time:

    I
didn't draw the uppers in on the first plan I posted, but with uppers
added you could have more upper storage (right), and about the same in
the middle plan--the numbered cabinets in the middle and right plans are
drawn in above the proposed plan on the left, for comparison:

    In
addition, if you use all drawer bases, you'll have more storage. You
can also make the counters deeper, 27-30", for more
counter space, since Ikea uppers are deeper than standard, but then the
cabinets on the short wall would need to move to the right by the same
amount, or become narrower by the same amount.

    GW discussions--all drawer bases

    GW discussions--deeper counters

I'll have to play around on the IKEA planner and try putting the sink on that other wall. Ideally, the range would stay against an exterior wall to make venting easier.

We already have most (if not all) of our base cabinets as drawers, but I never considered bumping it out. How would that work with the range being on the same wall? Or would that only work if the sink was there instead?

If your ceiling joists run perpendicular to the long wall, you could run the vent through the ceiling, to the exterior wall, if the range is on the short wall.

As for the deeper counters, it depends on the style of your range. With a slide in, you have an extra strip of counter behind it. I have a range with the raised control panel on the back, so I made a shallow shelf the same shape as the panel's top, rounded on the corners, with sides that extend below the counter top. My counter on that wall is 3" deeper so the shelf is just deep enough for s&p shakers. You could also have a bumped out box, covered in tile, the same width as the range, with or without a recessed shelf, or something like this:

    Deep recessed shelf:

mama goose I really like that idea! Seeing as there is no room for an island, it'd be great to have more counter space, even if just an additional few inches.

I'm currently fighting with the IKEA planner trying to make this new layout work. It's being exceptionally uncooperative today...

After fighting with the IKEA planner for a while, I have an updated layout. I actually really like the uninterrupted counter area! Any additional thoughts/comments?

View 1: (will potentially add open shelving around range depending on space once everything is installed)

View 2: (need to do an inventory of everything that will be stored in the kitchen, and decide if that wine storage would be better off as a cabinet)

View 3: (For some reason the door is not showing, but the opening to the dinning room is on the left of this wall. Fridge might switch location with cabinet depending on the size of the chimney on the right hand side. Won't know until we start demo. We might also leave it there and buy a regular depth fridge, again depending on the size of the chimney)

Thanks again for all the input! I'm still open to more suggestions if anyone sees anything that can be improved on.
