Thoughts on a used Viking vs a new Thor Kitchen?

last modified: 8 years ago

Hello I'm in the market for a new range (natural gas, not dual fuel, 30"). I would love a Bluestar, Capital, Thermador etc but alas $4-6k is not in the budget at the moment. I was leaning toward NXR, which has 4x 15k btu burners. That's $2k. Then discovered Thor Kitchens which seems like an identical range but is 2x 15k and 2x 18k btu burners for $1700. Seems to be a better deal than NXR. Then stumbled across a used Viking for $1700. I'm waiting to hear back from the seller on the exact model number but if I'm not mistaken it's 4x 15k open burners (the NXR & Thor are both sealed). Wondering what you guys think of these options...a used Viking with open burners vs a new Thor with 2 higher BTU burners, but sealed and obviously not as good of a brand. Any input would be appreciated before I tear my hair out.

EDIT- Viking model # is Vgsc305-4bdss

There are a number of happy NXR owners here, sorry I don't know anything about the Thor. I would stay away from the Viking. I did a quick search and it seems like that model came out in 2005 or earlier ( that when I see the first complaint posts) I also did a search at the current owner of Viking http://vikingrange.middlebyadvantage.com/Clients/CustomPage.aspx?page=/Viking/index.html and could not even find that model listed, so getting parts could be problematic. What could need to be replaced you say, well I had a Viking of around that vintage, so did my FIL, the door hinges sagged over time and they redesigned the part, but did not list it as available for my model. If you search here, you will find many horror stories about Viking, so I would pass at that price.

I'm in the market also for a new gas range and looking at the Thor. I think I might get it. I just wish there was a retailer near me so I could see it in person. Open the door, etc. get a 'feel' for it. I have done extension (extension) searches on line, in person comparing the Thor to other well known names that are in retailers. I cook A LOT. I bake A LOT so having a great oven and the cooktop part is important to me.

After having to replace something every 6 months or so on my KitchenCrap oven (as I call it). Something in the oven has broken again - won't turn on, I'm done, hence, looking for a new oven. As soon as I decide if it is the Thor Kitchen, I will leave feedback here.

Just my 2 cents - I'm pretty leery about purchasing used equipment. My thought is, if there isn't anything wrong with it, why are they selling it? Unless they are trading up, just don't need it anymore, etc. Anyway, here you can find an update on my Thor Kitchen range, since you mentioned you might be interested in one.

    Hi there!

I know it’s been quite some time since you installed the Thor range, but I just stumbled on your post and was wondering if you still enjoy using it. It’s been a decent span of time and I am seriously considering the 48” range.

Any advice is very much appreciated!

Hi! I can honestly say I love it. It's a beautiful stove/range, works great, and I don't regret buying it.

If I had to do it all over here's my critiques...at the time I was looking at Thor and NXR. They are practically identical, I believe they use all the same parts, etc. Basically the same stove but branded differently. The NXR was a little more money, and all four burners were the "two-level" burners that go super low all the way to very high. The Thor has those same burners in the back, but the two front burners are super high powered. In hindsight I really LOVE those back burners and use them most of the time, so maybe having that x4 would have been better. I also have a huge griddle that I use on the stove top, going from front to back, so it would have been easier to control if it were spanning two identical burners. With the current setup I just try to visually adjust the front/back to match so the griddle is getting the same heat. I guess my optimal configuration would have been 1x high powered burner and 3x of the two-level burners. But that's just me. All burners are solid and work great.

I will say that the oven works well but the racks don't slide very well. I'm jealous of high end stoves that have racks on rollers, but not worth an extra $3000 for that feature for me.

All in all I'm very happy and recommend the Thor.

A little trick I found to help to get the racks to slide easier, coat with a little bit of vegetable oil and be sure to wipe off all the access. I do this about once a month or so and they slide much easier.

Thanks! I'll definitely give that a try!

How have you been cleaning the interior? Do you use oven cleaner spray? I was nervous about ruining the blue enamel.

I tried all the ways Thor recommended to clean it - and it just didn't work. So..yes, I used commercial cleaner. The well known brand - "oven off" - (I forget the exact name). It worked fine except for one area in the front of the oven, where it did chip the enamel did chip off. I'm not sure it is related to the oven cleaner though. I'm not thrilled that some of the enamel has chipped off but it hasn't affected the oven working great. Hope this helps.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. Guess that's a good reason to not clean my oven :-). I just need to do the window that's all that matters.

Having recently completed a Thor project, a couple of suggestions:

    1) Consider duel fuel

    2) If using the 48" range, consider 26" deep base cabinets. It's the one pro-style range that doesn't need to stick out 2".

The lack of a self cleaning oven is the downside.

How are the Thor's working out for you all? will this thing last 15-20yrs? hopefully longer...

Working out great for me so far (been 1 year). I think they are built to last, and they are simple enough where they should be serviceable (i.e. there’s no digital screen to break etc).

i do have one issue though, which is that the back left burner does the clicking thing, where it continually tries to light, even though it’s already lit. I finally called about it 2 weeks ago and it turns out to be a design flaw. The electrode that does the lighting is on the right side of the burner. On the back left burner, they said it should actually be on the left of the burner. They are having a service tech come out to fix it (apparently it’s fixable). I still haven’t heard from the tech, I’ll give it one more week before calling back. It was the holidays so I’m giving them some leeway. But the person at Thor that I spoke to was nice, immediately acknowledged it, etc. so I’m feeling relatively confident.

Great thanks for the info. Was the service tech in the US? I see they are out of California but via china built... I see it sold say on amazon and all the questions in the comments section are answered in broken English. I know that doesn't mean it wont be good service per-se but just made me more concerned. But hearing it works for you is great to hear! I really want one.

does the oven do well? feel like it cooks evenly etc. No self clean but that isn't a big deal to me. have you had any chipping on the interior? I saw on person say there's had chipping?

I'm still loving my Thor range. There were a couple of hiccups but the support at Thor has been great. There was some clicking with one of the burners and they sent me a new one right away. Super easy to change out.

There is a little bit of flaking on the blue porcelain but that I'm not concerned with and it doesn't affect the oven working correctly. I use my range A LOT. The temperature in the oven keeps stable even at a low temp. I'm able to put a brisket in there at 200 for 10 hours (to make a pulled brisket) and it's great.

Hope this helps. (Sorry for my delay in responding - been super busy making custom handkerchiefs and personalized embroidered blankets.)

    Happy Holidays!

I have not had any chipping, and the oven is fine. I don't feel like it's uneven or anything. I still have my issue with the clicking in one of the burners. I called twice about it, and both times spoke to very nice people in (I believe) California. The first time they said they were shipping me a new part, and putting in a service request. Someone was supposed to call me to schedule the appointment. After 3 weeks I did not receive the part or a phone call. I called back, again spoke to a nice person, and they weren't sure why this hadn't gone through. They sent the part (I did receive it a week later), and gave me the service ID# and the phone number for the maintenance tech that was supposed to have called me. I left a message for them 2 days ago and didn't hear back. I tried again yesterday using a different number I found online, and they did pick up. Apologized, and asked me to text them with the service ID# and my info (they were out in the field at the time). I did so and have not heard back yet. I'm not super worried about it yet, but I'll keep you updated. In the meantime the oven and stove are working, I just sometimes have the clicking in the back left burner. Not a huge deal.

I do think that in hindsight I MAY have preferred the NXR over the Thor simply because I like the smaller burners better than the huge 18k BTU burners. jwvideo's comment from above is dead-on. The big burners are great for boiling water in a big pot, but otherwise I think having the dual rings leads to more even heating rather than just having a huge ring.

I know it’s almost been a year but I’m looking at all thor products, can anyone shed some light on them please. If they are worth the buy or not. Looking at a package deal, with dishwasher, range n oven combo, vent, and fridge.

I can only speak for the stove but it's a solid workhorse and I still like it.

I would choose a Miele or Bosch dw.

Hi all- Our NXR range has been a colossal disappointment and source of frustration. I think if you search the forums here (appliances maybe?) you'll find our threads. I was actually inspired to come back here today because someone emailed me out of the blue about her NXR, which has the exact same issues ours does. I wont go into all the details, since I have to go to work, but you can find them if you hunt around here. Suffice it to say, although we LOVED it for the first 9 months or so, it has been nothing but problems since then. We have spent LOTS of money fixing broken parts, but at this point it would cost $1,000 to replace the burners, which have been clicking incessantly and spilling flame where they shouldn't -even with hyper-vigilant cleaning and professional service- for years now. I would never, ever recommend one to anyone unless you don't plan to need it for ore than a year or so.

Can anyone comment on Thor wine coolers? I am considering buying one, and not sure how they are with regard to noise level and keeping proper temperature. Any comments?

    Hi Everyone,

Here is the update so many have been asking me about. I have attached photos and videos. Customer service has been nonexistent. I have been trying to get in touch for weeks with someone, either no one answers or it goes to voicemail.

Finally, today, I was able to get in touch with someone after being on hold for 20 minutes and getting bounced around between different people at Thor Group.

Cut to the short....I would not purchase again. Please watch the video.

We have had a HORRIBLE experience with our Thor stove - I would NOT recommend buying one! Our stove was delivered and to our home and hooked up on December 23rd, just before Christmas. We were extremely excited to get it, based on Thor's reputation. However, when we tried to use the larger oven on Christmas Eve, it would not work (it is suspected that either the igniter or a wire are the cause). We tried to cook the food in the smaller oven, but it does not heat up properly, and 1 1/2 hours later, we still had no dinner for Christmas Eve. We were extremely upset and tried to contact Thor as well as the dealer from whom we purchased it. However, given that it was the holidays, we received no replies. Once the holidays were over, we were able to get a hold of someone at Thor and they rudely informed me of their strict, "no-return" policy. It is now January 24th and the stove is still not fixed. Fortunately, our Panasonic microwave and our crock pot DO work, so we have been using these more reliable appliances all month. We received an email several days ago, telling us that we need to pay mileage just for a technician to come out and even look at this BRAND NEW stove. It is 2022. How is this type of service for such a "high-end" product acceptable?!?!?!?!?! To make matters worse, we have discovered that all 6 burners on this stove are FAR too large for traditional cooking. There is no option to "simmer", and heat up a small pot of soup. Even on the lowest setting, these burners will cause your food to boil non-stop. This is absolutely the WORST purchase we have ever made. Do NOT make the same mistake we did!!!!!

I would NOT purchase from Thor ever. I purchased the 48” gas over and range in Oct 2020 but it was not installed until May 2021 since we were building the home. Like another reviewer said, the delivery was terrible and just left this in our yard. Fortunately we have a tractor and were able to move it carefully to the house.
We used the stove and oven from May until October without any problems. Then one day the oven knob light was randomly on in the morning when we woke up. The oven was slightly warm but the knob was in the off position. Turning on the oven and letting it ignite and then turning it off made the knob light turn off. This happened every day for about 4 days and then the circuit breaker the oven was plugged into simply flipped. We flipped it back and instantly it blew again. We unplugged the over, switched the breaker to on and then plugged it back in and it blew again. We tried plugging it into another circuit and the same thing happened, it would trip the breaker immediately. At this point we knew that it was definitely the oven, which was still under warranty. We called for service and about a week later were told that they could not find anyone in our area to fix it and asked if we could find someone. We spent about another week looking for someone who would work on this unit and called over a dozen appliance repair companies and could not find anyone. We called them back and they told us someone from a company four hours away would be contacting us. A week later we never heard from them so we called them back. They told us to wait another week. After another week we called Thor back and they told us they were trying to assign it to another company. Another few weeks went by, I was staying in contact with Thor throughout this entire time and at some point they manage to find someone but gave that technician a random phone number so it took another two weeks before that technician could contact us. At this point we had already past Thanksgiving and had been unable to host our large family since our oven did not work. The technician came out and spent the entire day trying to fix/diagnosis the oven but the parts that Thor had sent were completely wrong and did not take care of the problem. He had to order new parts which did not come in until after Christmas. At this point we were dodging snow storms and so it took another few weeks for him to be able to come out to install the part. Finally in mid January he was able to install the part and we had a working stove for three days. Immediately after he left the same thing began to happen with the oven light knob turning on randomly and the oven getting slightly warm when we had never touched the knob. After three days the oven blew the circuit and we are back in the same situation with a non functioning oven. Of course we contacted Thor and the technician. It has been another almost 3 weeks and we are now told that the technician is out of the country and only he is able to work on it. We are being told to wait another two weeks to even schedule the service. It will be over four months without a working oven and since it is still under warranty we cannot find another technician to fix it or attempt to fix it ourselves. I deeply regret purchasing a Thor product and will never do so again. This has been a horrible experience with no one at Thor trying to make this situation right. Anytime I express how difficult this has been without an oven and asked what Thor was able to do for us they’ve just told us they can do nothing and that we must wait. At this point I want my money back for the stove and start over with a new company.

To add to what others have said, I wouldn't recommend Thor ovens for any reason. We bought a 30" Thor Gas Oven in March of 2021, model number HRG3080ULP. In November 2022, during the warranty period, the oven stopped working. Every part of the electrical system has failed - the igniter, thermostat, ECU and even the wiring. Thor keeps sending the wrong parts with the correct price on the packing list. It's been ~90 days since starting this process with no timeline for resolution. The service costs and parts are already more than the original price of the unit.
