12" deep top and bottom cabinet microwave issue

I'm remodeling my kitchen and widening the island. in order to keep enough walk way I have to build 12" deep cabinets ( top and bottom) on that side of the island, the cabinet counter will extend out 13". My problem is i want to place an OTR microwave in that area and concerned since all OTR's stick out to 15.5". The distance between island and counter top will be 42" in this configuration. I'm thinking of making bottom cabinets 2" deeper ( so 14") with a 15" counter. This way the OTR microwave won't appear as bad but the distance from Island to counter will only be 40". Any advice? should I just build 12" deep top and bottom and don't care that the OTR sticks out 3.5 inches or extend the bottom a bit? I don't want to tighten the walking space between island and microwave. thanks

Try an "over the counter" microwave by sharp rather than over the range microwave. The only place I'd install an over the range microwave is "over the range."Sharpusa.com " is the website..they have pdf files with install dimensions.......the over the counter microwave is a nice piece. Other than that -try ge.com for their ge spacemaker microwave.

You can also have a microwave shelf cabinet installed with an outlet. Then you can plug in a regular microwave - especially if you only need a smaller microwave.

If your 12 inch deep cabinet is on an inside wall, you may be able to do a cut out on the back of the cabinet and take out the drywall behind the opening to get an extra 4 inches of space. My daughter is doing that.
