"Mommy, look, the mountain is broken!"

My 3.5 year old son and I were having breakfast in our new home. As I recall, we moved
in two days before this conversation occurred :). It
was an overcast day, rather gloomy, and the mountain that towers over
our little town (and which can be seen from our house) was partially
obscured by some thick clouds, making its top "broken", as my son put
it...I smiled at my son and I made a mental note to tell this to my
husband in the evening. I knew he would have a good chuckle.

I
then looked around our great room. Kitchen/dining/sitting-living area.
One either loves or hates an open floor plan, I find...Boxes to be
sorted out and unpacked, furniture to be arranged, art to find the place
for, and oh so many other things to do. I didn't even
want to think about the upstairs or the garage.

The house was just built, it was really lovely and it didn't need any
work, but we needed to get settled and we had to do it relatively
quickly, because we were expecting our second child and there was no
time to waste. He (or she) - as we didn't want to find out the gender,
would be here before we know it! Although, I knew well enough not to
fall into a trap of buying "things" just because we had the space...We
somehow had to incorporate what we already had and had planned to keep, with some new pieces that I will have to find for us. We also felt very
strongly about putting our own stamp on this place, so to say. You see,
we were both urbanites to the core and we have had a good fortune to
live in some amazing places...And here we were, with (almost) two
children and living in a beautiful, but remote town, with no jazz bar, a
French restaurant or a spa (I loved going to hot-stone massages) in
sight. Was it even us? My husband called our new house a "big white
box". With my professional career on hold and no business cards in my
wallet with "Wife/Mother" on them, I poured myself in...

So, here we go again, a little over 1.5 years later. The baby turned out to be a girl and my son is now five. House-wise...Busy times! We removed all the builder' installed shelving in all of the closets, walk-in pantry, just everywhere really, and installed custom closets throughout. We also upgraded all the builder' installed light fixtures to something that was more "us"...Some of our books migrated to a dedicated library room (we always wanted to have one!) and the children have a blast playing in their big playroom. Etc, etc...But the sitting area in our house...I really struggled with it, as some of you on Houzz might know...I feel that a good space is never really "done", but I think this is as close as it will get to it...for now :).
