Dining room chandelier

Our new Florida home boasts a large great room with a decent size dining space. The tapestry is very special to us and continues to have pride of place. The dining chandelier obviously does not work. I'm looking for something that will not block the tapestry too much and will fit with the overall space. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Something more substantial & hang it significantly lower.

Orb lighting or the glass ball lighting, not so obtrusive

yes lower and something that is lighter, ie can be seen through, maybe a rug to ground the space

I second the lower and see through

Lower, and don't worry about blocking tapestry, it will still show. You might want to paint the wall a rust color to bring more drama into the space.

that current light height is a hoot! did the previous owners stand on the table to eat?

The lighting in the first two pictures above would be nice.

Make sure that whatever you chose for a chandelier is centered over your dining area. It looks like right now the table and the chandelier are not centered correctly. I also agree that the chandelier should be a lot lower.

Please have the tapestry "mounted" correctly. The method you have used will cause the weave to become permanently warped (out of shape), and can also cause stress rips.

As for a kind chandelier, I would recommend a brass with smoke glass one to complement your tapestry.

Consider three recessed lights that blend with the ceiling so nothing distracts from the tapestry on display. Use one pin light accenting your table center piece and possibly used with candle light for dining. The other two lights would be art lights that wash the tapestry with subtle light bringing out the depth of color that otherwise disappears in subdued night lighting.

Framing projector trims use custom cut shutters and/or optics to shape the light to exactly fit the size and shape of the tapestry. They are relatively expensive and take a lot more time to install than standard adjustable trims. However, when done correctly, the effect is amazing.

Also think about moving the table down to allow for a shallow depth side board or glass top on brackets with a couple of wall sconces for subtle indirect lighting in that corner of the room.

Just now I posted this on another thread, so though 'early' in your process, I'll share it anyway -- a simple something on other wall could be nice, so here goes:

"Noren is a Japanese-style curtain traditionally used for sunshade. In modern days, they are used to provide subtle privacy between rooms by placing one in the doorway, mostly used between kitchen or bathroom and general living area. This Enso linen Noren is hand painted with natural dyes. The Japanese enso symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe. It has a sleeve at the top for a bamboo or metal pole (not included) to thread through. 35"W x 58.5"L. $59.00.

I think something like this would go nicely (they sell this one at Lowe's). Also, I'd recommend placing a large, light/neutral, rectangular rug beneath your table to anchor this area and darker colored pillows to your sofa to balance out the space and make it more unified.

This seems to repeat neutrals already there in flooring, maybe walls. $2000.

Thank you all for all your suggestions. So many great ideas to consider. Some additional comments/clarification.
    - yep, the fixture (a builder special) is not only wrong, but not centered and way too high. I am holding off having it moved until we find the right chandelier so I can it in at one time.
    - the tapestry is handmade by a well known Turkman fiber artist. The top is, in fact, woven into the scalloped edge you see. When we first got it, we had taken it to a fabric museum in DC for consultation about conservation and hanging. It is mounted by Velcro on custom shaped wood pieces that are bolted into the wall.
    - I do plan on either textured wallpaper or paint on that niche. I particularly like the suggested shade of blue which does pick up some of the colors of the tapestry. What shade was it?
    - And yes, I do want to add a rug to that space. That's definitely on the to do list.
    - So many interesting lighting suggestions. Now to narrow them down!
    - I hadn't considered the option of of focused ceiling lights. Ceilings are 10' so that has to be considered as well as finding the right person to install them as it doesn't sound like a typical lighting project.

Again, many thanks for all your suggestions. Greatly appreciated.

Maybe a console with 2 lamps and a cool flush mount instead
