I have an open plan kitchen living/dining area kitchen cabinet beautiful cherry wood . All window frames wood and base trim is wood. My dilemma is every color I choose for the walls would look great with all the wood painted white I have cream couches and hardwood maple floor I will try and post photos ASAP. But will appreciate any suggestions before then

Don't worry about the cream sofas, as Darzy said paint all the trim's and doors and leave the cabinets & floors.

What kind of wood is it ? Need a picture. If the wood is in a early craftsman do not paint the wood

SO sorry cannot get photos downloaded not craftsman wood , cherry natural baseboard , trim windows and doors..about so overwhelming thinking about painting all the trim we have 6 windows (all wood of course) and 4 doors in this space have painted the walls 1 times in 17 years So that might give you some idea of how bad I am at choosing colors.

ooohhh...real cherry trim? Not something cheap stained to look like cherry? Let's work wall colors to go with the cherry trim and maple floors. One of my absolute favorites for going with wood is Benjamin Moore Elk Horn...guys...help me out?

The elk horn seem very dark on line. I think with out a photo it's nearly impossible to select a paint color and then it still depends on the lighting etc in the room. You have to see the paint color in the room. Unless we are talking any off white maybe for a wall color. The trim might be a simple modern 70s that I would paint. As Ironwood said it might just be birch or anything else stained cherry. If you have double hung multi-pane windows they can really look sharp painted white. So please post a photo.

I have also noted so many times people referring to"natural" cherry or other woods when in fact it is stained wood. To me a natural cherry or any wood would simply have a clear coat of varnish on it. That is natural wood protected. So it shows a natural light color of fresh cut wood. For instant the "new" look of maple cabinets has a very light color now because it has a clear coat of varnish on it. Unlike the maple of the 50s & 60s which also had a maple stain on maple wood making it much darker.

The cherry cabinets were never stained they were varnished in a Matt clear they are a vert rich golden brown with a reddish tint to them I think the computer will be up and running by fri and wil def post photos then. As per builders plans 1970 all trim was cherry. Please bare with me I will have photos posted ASAP

Once a picture comes up we will know. With a lighter wood ,like it sounds like you have the Elkhorn paint color may be great. A picture is worth a 1000's words

Mistake made on floor, it is birch. cabinets, fire place , window frames and trim cherry

Now that I see your trim & wood work I would paint it all white and leave the cabinets or paint those too. The fireplace I would paint all but the top ledge if your keeping the cabinets stained. I would also think about painting the wood bar stools and coffee table black. Let your floors take the stage. Sadly I feel your wood work is not very special The B/M Elk Horn wall color that Iron wood suggested would look great with your floors and sofas. The wall color now and all the trim make the whole room look golden in tones and needs more contrast over all. The White painted trim will add a much needed crisp look to the home and update it wonderfully. The white trim will also bring more architectural line to the room that is needed. As another note. Your pictures, wall decor ,table top accessories & lamps all need to be much larger in scale to update the space.

I would add window panels to each side of the windows over the blinds to soften them. You need fabric curtains & pillows. Unless ther is a problem with allergies in the home. The space is feeling a bit office / commercially decorated right now. Plants live or faux will help. I don't mean to sound harsh but I'm looking at the room from a decorative perspective. You have a nice home with great bones that could be absolutely Wonderful !!!

Thanks Kevin, I agree with nearly everything you say especially painting all the trim white . Just seems so daunting. Would never paint the cabinets really like them as they are, hand made by local Amish gentleman 32 years ago and have not had anything done to them since. We do plan on lightly sanding and putting some varnish , there are spots that are looking worn from steam etc..I totally agree with the officey look comment I am useless when it comes to decorating. One other question if I paint all the trim around the windows should I go all the way in, or just the frame? Thanks again for the suggestions . I will attempt quite a few of them.

I would paint all the wood trim to the glass and out to the wall. Blue painters tape is great when painting trims.

Here's some accessories all from homedecorators.com that would fit with your style and add to the room. also adding some more faux or live plants to the room will bring life into the room. Click on pics to see full views.

What are the colors in the rug? It's hard to tell in the photo.
Blues and greys in the rug. Love love all 3 items you chose. Had to strip down the room a couple of years ago son had heart pump and then had a transplant so the less dust mold etc. but it still looked old and worn so your suggestions are much appreciated already have friend willing to help with the trim so fingers crossed. And coffee table def painted black. Thank you so much

Philo, I'm so sorry for that sad time in your life. Everyday is a gift. Celebrate it and give yourself a whole new look. Budget decor is my specialty. As you know the room just needs some updating and a few new touches. Can you have fabrics now ? There are leather real or faux toss pillows and other ways to soften a room if you can't use fabrics. I'd be happy to help you in any way you would like to go with your room. P.S. Could we have a close up pic of the rug? Kevin

slate grey, or moving towards a dark blue/grey can pull all this together

this would also help your black appliances look less prominent

You seem to really love your cabs. What if you do a tile backsplash just to dress up the wall between the cherry and the white counters. Maybe three colors in the glass tiles. Then paint all the walls white, in a matte finish…BM Simply White. I love white with cherry. The only picture I could find was stairs, but…

Add some pillows in cream and white for the sofa, just to tie in the white/cream.

FYI When selecting a white paint color for your trim be sure to look at it closely with the counter tops that the shades are closely matching so one or the other won't look dingy next to each other.
