Grandbaby's quilt Finished!!!

I finished the binding on our first grandbaby's quilt that I started at retreat. Our DIL is a HUGE Harry Potter fan, so this is a Harry Potter "inspired" quilt. I used Spoonflower to make the fabric in the center of the quilt and am pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks to everyone at retreat for suggestions - I love how the bobbin work turned out on the wand and swirly stars. The baby shower is next Sunday so I have to keep it a secret for another week.

    Here is a closer view of the bobbin work. I had never done it before, either. The girls at retreat suggested it. I used pearle cotton for the gold, and the silver was also a pearle cotton, but much finer and a little trickier to use because the threads didn't want to stay together. I did do it on the top only. I tried some practice pieces - the first tracing the pattern onto freezer paper, but it was the berries trying to get the paper off the fabric - especially in the lilttle star sections. I then used just that gold tracing paper you can get on a roll at the fabric shops. I pinned it to the wrong side of the fabric and sewed from the wrong side, so the heavy pearle cotton thread which was loaded in the bobbin, would be on the "right" side when I was finished. I also watched loads of tutorials on bobbin work. It wasn't that hard to do. I used a darning needle to pull the treads to the wrong side to tie off the thread. Some of the tutorials have you hand winding the bobbin, but I was able to do mine on my machine bobbin winder. You do have to reload your bobbin often, because the thread is so heavy.

    Magothyriver - I used my Pfaff 7570 and didn't have any problems. I did test tension settings and ended up using a "9" on the top, and didn't touch my bobbin tension. After I sandwiched the quilt, I used Sulky premium 40 wt. rayon thread on the top and white poly/cotton thread in my bobbin for the quilting. I just did echo quilting on the designs to let them stand out.
