Roses from November 2

After about four inches of rain recently, it seems that the Austins seem to be winning the rain tolerance test better than others. Here are a few of the best rain survivors.

Molineux

Gertrude Jekyll

The Poet's Wife

Brother Cadfael

Strawberry Hill

Grande Dame

Poseidon

It's supposed to be 72 degrees tomorrow. This might be one of the years when I still have roses at Thanksgiving.

Ann, they look really nice, love the color of Strawberry Hill. Your The Poet's Wife looks good. Mine gets a rusty looking BS, and I pruned it back harshly. It is still getting the BS. How is yours? My Poseidon blooms look like yours, also.

They all look beautiful Ann. I love Austins!! I don't think my Strawberry Hill ever gets that rich of a pink. I moved them to a spot that gets more sun a few weeks ago so hoping I get lots more blooms next year. Judy

    Thank you everyone!

Kentucky Rose - TPW has been very healthy for me. Here's a bush shot I took today. I don't typically get rust or black spot. TPW is about 2ft x 2ft; the yellow color is much less faded in cooler weather. She's always had a nice scent.

Judy - That was a slightly atypical color for Strawberry Hill. Usually it's a pure pink like this.

Just planted two mini roses today - Stars 'N Stripes and Vineyard Song from Burling Leong. They were in great shape and hope I can pick up a couple more minis before the ground cools off too much.

Lovely pics :) I'm curious about Poseidon- saw a great looking potted plant in bloom at a nursery, but ended up not buying it because the colour seemed somehow dead/flat. Your pic makes it seem much more lively, tho. Have you had any problems with it?

Ann, yours looks spotless and healthy. Thanks for the picture. Mine is probably a climate issue. Picture after I chopped it back.

Kentucky Rose - TPW looks like mine but with thicker canes. Mine has a lot of thin but upright canes; maybe not enough sun or needs some pruning. Let's compare our TPWs next year!

Curdle - I just planted Poseidon (grafted on multiflora) earlier this year and it's been a great rose. Very healthy, blooms a lot in the summer, doesn't require a lot of water. The only thing I don't like is the lack of fragrance. I really love the color which has a lot more gray in it than many other lavenders which have a pinkish cast. It makes a great cut flower, lasts quite awhile outside as well. I have a concern about its ultimate height. I've heard it can grow to 7ft or so. It's planted in a floribunda row between Julia Child and Easy Does It which are each 4ft; Poseidon has matched that height in less than year. It's also lot narrower than most floribundas, shaped a bit more like hybrid tea.

Here's Poseidon compared with Easy Does It which was planted three years ago.

This might be way more information than you were looking for, but I really like this rose!

Ann, I appreciate the words to Curdle about 'Poseidon'. I have been resisting 'Love Song' and 'Neptune'. A grayed lavender over a mauve is what I seek. Thank you.

Your welcome Irisgal! I hope the grayish undertone is produced in your climate as well.
