When designing a fireplace such as this, how do you determine the best dimensions for your stone and wood surround? I have a 36 inch wide by 28 inch high opening with a standard 8 foot ceiling. The code states I must have a minimum of 8 inches to the sides and 12 inches above of non-flammible surface (stone, brick, etc...) Do you have any advice as to what would look best in this scenario? I want something that looks close to this picture. I am curious, though, how much area I should have of stone to the sides and top as well as how wide and tall the mantle and surround should be. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you!!!

Azurastone mesh marble wall cladding is made from 1" x 2,3,4,5,6" pieces so that when dealing with tight spaces you will still get a nice pattern. It can run vertically or horizontally, and come in 3 color blends. http://azurastoneworks.com

How do you attach the wood surround to the stacked stone?, I mean , do you set the mantel inside the masonary on flush up against it? I am wondering about the neatness.

The wood mantel really needs to be installed first, and then run the stone to it.

Trying to add a mantel after the fact is possible, but nightmarish.

This comment is for COASTROAD Heath & Patio:

I have a opel 2 fire place and the fire box is 25 inches wide. To keep it in proportion what dimensions would suit it? I was going to do 12 inches of stone on the top and bottom of the doors and 10 inch wide legs but cannot decide the height of the top between the stone and the bottom of the mantle molding.. I am totally stumped!

Hi bown - can you post a photo, or send it directly to me at tom@coastroadonline.com ?

At 25" wide, that seems pretty small, but there is probably more to the story.

I was going by the measurement at the edge of each door. It is an opel 2 by rsf. Some items i look at say 37" in the book and others say 25". I'm not sure which to go by now.

Here is a front on photo of the actual fireplace. Not very pretty! I am going to paint the doors black with high heat paint at another time. Gold is just so unsightly.
