It looks like a weevil. Do you get Vine Weevil in the US?

It is a weevil of some sort.

in my MI.. mid november really isnt bug hunting season.. other than for knowledge ...

If it is vine weevil the adult chews leaves and it will also lay eggs in the soil which can overwinter and the grubs will eat the roots of plants. They are bad news at any time of the year, We don't know where AS is located but winter here doesn't stop vine weevils..... if that is what they are.

Hubby saw it on one of the pittosporum the other day.

As I was pulling weeds last week I found LOTS of grubs (I think) in the soil surrounding the Tupelo tree.

Not it sure how to treat all this. I know I need to ask the nursery but I want to find some answers beforehand so I can make sure they're recommending the right thing.

My dog absolutely adores beetle grubs. I tossed one to her one day when I was weeding and unearthed one, and she ate it and decided it was good. Now when she sees me digging in the dirt, she is right there snuffling out the grubs. It's been a great natural control for me. :-)

There are two weevils in the photo. (One is hiding round the back of the stem.) Vine weevil grubs are quite small, rather like a fat blowfly maggot. They are mostly a problem in potted plants here. Established plants in the garden can survive a few nibbled roots but in a pot the weevils can cause complete collapse of a plant. IF they are vine weevils. I still don't know if you get them in the US. Vine Weevil info.
