I agree with downbytheriver and would add: Perhaps consider matching shelving on either side of the fireplace. An area rug (on top of the carpet) would be nice too. It defines the space and adds a bit of color.

To the left of the mirror is a console table.. If I place that under the mirror it is a little tight to walk between couch/table.

Would taking the mirror down just be best? Would you hang anything there instead? Great idea for painting the air grate- I never thought of that.

yes just remove it then. you could do a shelf there with leaning photos maybe or a large canvas

I think your mirror is fine. I would move the three pictures you have between the windows to the far end of the sofa above the lamp, for better balance. Remove the tall thing in the right corner, and add art on either side of the fireplace. Ideally, your TV could go next to your fireplace where your tree is and art would go above the fireplace.

Your three frame grouping is a little large for the space between the windows. It doesn't have room to breathe. Maybe it could move to one side of the fireplace, with a single piece of art on the other side.

Could you center the couch on the two windows and pull the other couch forward so arms almost touch?

@grover- very nice! Love what you did. I do wish we could move the TV but we don't have cable access on either side of the fireplace. Maybe that's something I can have the cable come out to fix

@kay- I wish I could. Unfortunately to the right of the Windows is the front door/stairs upstairs.. Therefore when we try to center the couch and then move the other almost touching, the back of the couch (the one that would be facing fireplace) is too close to stairs and doesn't allow room for walking. The only other option is to push love seat completely against stairs and have a wide opening

Some ideas for decor in your style include vintage plates and old trays. Pewter is nice if you can find it because it doesn't tarnish. I use a couple of silver trays and need to polish them 3 or 4 times a year. I also like well done art with a flower / country theme. Etsy is a good place to look for original art. I am a fan of Christie Repasy who sells from her own web site as well as on ebay.

I dont think you need anything between the windows. The drapes are lovely alone. Steer clear of/rethink word art and phrase art. Its not pretty or unique. Look for things to hang that make you feel something and aren't mass produces. It will elevate your room!

I like your mirror. If you pushed your console table all the way right to the edge of the wall could your mirror work above it?

You could add a rustic iron work piece on the wall.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Move the mirror over the console. Welcome Sign needs to go.

The mirror looks terrible on the big empty wall because it's in competition with the air return and the thermostat and all the switches. It blends right into the wall almost like a window. Mirrors can be very cold and this is a good example of how that happens.

Move the floor lamp to a spot near one of the sofas. It doesn't belong next to the fireplace.

I don't mind the welcome sign, though if you're going to use it, it should be lower. But this might be a good spot for the mirror.

I do agree that you should look for accessories that are more personal and unique. If there are a hundred of them on the shelves at Hobby Lobby, you don't need them in your home.

That huge vent is a real problem. Definitely paint it the same color as the wall to minimize it.

My own home has a cottage / French country (simplified) style. Over the years I have learned to buy less Hobby Lobby and more authentic decor - real vintage china, platers and more original art. I have bought some things at crafts fairs where local artist / craftsmen sell their work. I have bought some online from eBay or owner websites. Other art is faith inspired, and when your child gives you a Mother's Day gift picked out just for you - if often finds a special place too. I do have an occasional piece from Hobby Lobby. (Some pics of my house are in my "my pics" idea book). If I posted my living room I'd get a lot of "change this or that" - but everything I have for decor is something I like and is personal to me or my family. This type of decor last longer and is more timeless because it is less affected by passing trends.

Perhaps consider adding architectural interest with a sort of wainscoting and add square black & white photos and frames such as in this image.

But to the ones suggesting moving the mirror over the console table, not sure if it will fit. It is rather large. I will take down and try to play with it some this afternoon

There's a couple of options available for this type of work. If you're relatively handy and have a few tools, you could diy in a weekend. You could hire a handyman locally to do this very easily for you and maybe save some $$ by priming and painting the finished work yourself. Big box stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot sell wainscoting that's pre-engineered to fit together.

You have a cozy, casual, cottagy room going. I would stay on that path, without venturing into Americana themed accessories, which are just a little too cutsey. You are getting some great ideas here, and I can't wait to see where you end up!

Your sofa should be centered on your windows as you see in this photo. I assume the other sofa will then be against the back wall.

Move the table that was behind the sofa to the wall where you originally placed the mirror. I'm not crazy about this location for the mirror because of the reflection of the windows. I would place a canvas above the table and add buffet lamps or wall candle holders to finish the wall.

Have you considered wall coverings or wallpaper? It will add visual interest, texture and some contrast. Maybe just a small area of the wall, like the entryway. Or maybe half wall up the wall with the fireplace, instead of wainscoting, and add a trim where wallpaper and paint meets. Here's some photos, sorry the style and design is so off from your American/Rustic Cottage style, but hard to find exactly. Just to give an idea. There are some neutral wall coverings with amazing textures and styles that can match the feeling you're going for. Just an idea. :)

If I move the console table under the mirror the space is tight to walk by. We do prefer the couch in front of the TV for more seating area looking at the tv when we are all together. . . I did measure last night and the mirror would be very tight to hang over where the console table is now. .

I added the mirror to brighten the space originally. Since it reflects the window it does add some light to the space. We have a covered porch and much light isn't able to get in. However, I will take down and explore some of these options y'all have given!
