which direction is left in this pic?

The shady bit I would consider dappled shade.

Northeast

So then that just gets sun in the morning and the dappled shade the rest of the day?

The photo is taken from a patio door. From mid-afternoon to sunset, the sunlight is blocked by the wall along that side of the patio.

I would say that you could call most of it part shade, that's what dappled falls under. A couple hours of morning sun isn't really going to change that except to move it more towards a part sun designation. Closer to the house will be more shade.

But these designations aren't as useful as you might think. They give you a rough idea of what might work but ultimately it's a question of what will look acceptable to you at that site. Some stuff that wants full sun in LA will burn to a crisp unless it has some afternoon shade in Riverside.
