Amazon Prime..would you?

Amazon Prime is 20.00 off today only. Would you or wouldn't you? I'm so torn.

I would and I do. I don't do it for the quick delivery, but to save shipping costs. There are other advantages also.

I do not understand the appeal of Prime. But I have plenty of stores near me that I wouldn't consider shopping online for day-to-day items just to make sure I'm getting my money's worth from Prime. On the occasion I do order online, there are always free shipping deals from stores, anyway. Even WalMart and Target offer free shipping deals.

D_gw, my neighbor has Prime and uses it for her college kids' care packages. She says she's losing money now because they're getting more from her now than they ever did!

My family would revolt if I replaced their Netflix and Spotify. Prime's offerings are so limited that it's not a battle I want to take on until they leave the nest. Besides, I'm already into Season 2 of Shameless, and I'm not turning back.

I've had Prime from the beginning, I wouldn't be without it, the shipping alone is worth it for me. I'm in the land of stores and shopping/outlet malls. There are still many items and brands that I can't find locally, and I won't compromise. They are shipped here or to my mom's house, and it has been great for me. We don't have lockers in this area.

I never use the music, and rarely use the video.

Lisa, that is the truth about care packages! That is okay though. Sometimes Prime splits shipments which can make for an amusing care package. One day they might send a package of Mr Clean magic erasers and then send the goodies a day or two later. Thanks for the sponges Mom?

We use Netflix and Prime. I rationalize the Prime video as a "bonus" for paying for Prime and not a replacement for Netflix. We have loved Prime's Alpha House, Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent.

I use Prime many times a month. Is there a code for the $20 off????

Lynn, it's new subscriptions only :(

    Aww, darn it!

I love Prime. I have watched some very good shows on Prime video, too.

We had it, but not being big "TV" or movie fans, it wasn't a great bargain. I am seldom in a huge rush for a delivery. If I can't find what I need in this tiny town, I balance the
wait for delivery with the annoyance of a round trip to ABQ ... often
    online works better.

WalMart will ship to home/store for free on a lot of things, Home Depot delivers many things and will ship to their closest store on many things.

We have a shared Amazon list for non-urgent things, and if something is urgent, whoever orders it gets the rest of the stuff.

And the stuff I like on NetFlix is usually free or with a few ads.

I certainly would. I buy a lot from Amazon and use their streaming video (along with Netflix) so it's well worth it for me. It's just so convenient and fast that it's my first choice for most everything except groceries. One thing I prefer about shopping online is that you can use product reviews in making a decision about what to buy. Not to mention that you don't have to drive all over trying to find what you want.

Why not just give it a try for a year and then cancel if it wasn't worthwhile for you.

I'm wondering if Amazon is offering the discount as an extra incentive against the #grabyourwallet campaign.

Oh yes, especially if you will be careful about what you purchase. I'm going to give Prime at least another year (they have now started charging tax for our state but so does almost everyone else too). I'm careful about what I purchase too, trying to avoid counterfeit items or anything remotely suspicious of being so. It's so convenient though when you have no or limited time to go out and shop.

I have Prime, which I originally got for the streaming service. Watch a few things on it (I also have Netflix, which has more shows that I am interested in by a mile, but there are a few things I watch on Amazon). But it really does pay off for me in shipping charges, and I enjoy the perk of the 2-day shipping, even though I would never pay for 2-day shipping on its own.

Do it! I adore Prime. I can shop late at night, find what I'm looking for with a few clicks rather than driving from store to store (then back again for the best bargain). I have heavier things delivered to the door and I don't worry about the size of my trunk or being able to lift it. I watch their programs. Right now I am watching Good Girls Revolt. I do feel bad that I am not giving all my business to local shops and I don't like all the packaging. I have a garage full of boxes and packing material. I am careful to recycle all. Returns are a pain because you have to pack it up, but Amazon makes it as easy as possible.

Found that I usually get things faster w/ Prime than my remembering to stop at the store to pick something up. Select "prime" items to get the free shipping.

This might just do it for me. I buy a reasonable amount of stuff on Amazon and would appreciate the free shipping. Video not so much, but maybe free books (rentals I assume). I subscribed to HBO Now for the latest Game of Thrones season and don't watch any other HBO and am still paying for it, so I might as well cancel and give Prime a try.

I love my prime. Any shopping is a 25 minute drive and add the time in the store....it takes a lot of time. I just wiped down my bathrooms with the 3 pack of Lysol wipes I ordered.

I love my prime. Paid $99 for it back in April (then they had a $79 sale a month later) Wish I could renew at the $79 price, but I am stuck at 99 now forever. Not that its not worth it. It is! If you shop Amazon much at all, totally worth it. If you have a Kindle even better since you get a free book a month, and if you have a Smart TV or just a laptop you can watch movies for free! Oh and almost forgot the free music streaming. And unlimited photo storage.

    So yea.. get it.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned or not but you can have up to three addresses on your Amazon Prime account. My mother my daughter and I all share One Prime account. So each of us pays about $33 a year for free 2-day shipping.

We save a bundle on shipping. There are lots of items that our local stores either never carried, or no longer carry that we purchase from Amazon. It's worth it to not spend our TIME going all over town just to find out that nobody has what we are looking for, when it's something that's not a very common item.

My daughters in college get free Prime accounts with Amazon. I have to admit it is a pretty sweet deal.

Westsider (and others) I also hate shopping! I use Amazon and Jet both. Even TP in bulk! We are in a small town and I wouldn't go to Walmart anyway, but the closest one is 20 minutes or so and Target is even further. I do go to Target in the big city where I work. I just ordered angel tree gifts from there yesterday, and did get a discount (coldweather gear - I bought 3 children's coats), but no free shipping. I could have had it shipped to a store, but I'm fine with paying a bit to have it sent directly to the house.

    Monicakm_gw states above:

This comment from Monica caught my interest and so I looked at the Prime "rules" about households. The rules say you can have more than one person in your household on the account but I could not find where it said you could use more than one address. Does anyone else out there use this arrangement like Monica?

(I am not doubting it can be done -- I just want to get in on it!)

Yes we have multiple addresses - our home, our company, you can send things to friends. I've never run into a limit on shipping addresses. We also have multiple payment methods for home and business.

I understand your setup that different shipping addresses can be used, 3katz, but I guess i was wondering if different people not in the same household can share an account. Monica's comment makes it sound like she Mom and daughter are at different addresses, but maybe Monica does all of the ordering?

No, Monica doesn't do all the ordering (: we've had this setup for about 3 years so I don't remember exactly how she did it but the Prime account is under my daughter's name. I pay for my purchases with my credit card and they come to me. Mom pays or her purchases with her credit card and they come to her house. Maybe she sent us invitations, I just don't remember.

Thanks! Decided to go for it. I reasoned that at the very least, I will save money not have to buy "extra" things to get up to the $35 regular amount for free shipping.

I have Prime too. For me it's a convenience tho I don't use it for everything. My kids go to a private h.s. so we have to buy their textbooks. It really came in handy then b/c I was able to,get their books quickly rather than wait for the snail mail 3-week delivery via media mail. It has come in handy for items I needed quickly but couldn't find locally. I do watch a few things on Prime but agree Netflix has better choices.

My parents share my account for Prime video-my mom downloaded the app to her IPad and I just logged her in with my account info. As for shopping, I've purchased things on my mother's behalf using her credit card and shipping address, but they have a regular (non-prime) account they use for shopping since they do not order often. If she needs/wants free shipping then I order for her. My kids also use my account to order things (they are still in h.s. So live at home). They have their own debit cards tied to their bank accounts so when they purchase something, on the payment page they just use their own card number rather than mine. I always know when they purchase something b/c the Amazon emails come to my email address.

i never thought to use Amazon to send care packages! That will come in handy next year when my oldest is off to college!

    Love my Prime.

I did it! Thanks guys. I don't think I can go wrong trying it out for a year.

"Having prime saves me soooo much time. I hate shopping."

Same here and it also saves so much aggravation on finding/buying things that are not exotic but not necessarily easy to pick up. Example-my husband's back is bothering him and he mentioned a lumbar support pillow. 30 seconds later, it's ordered from Amazon Prime and 2 days later he's using it in his office.

Even if I were retired or not working and had the time to drive around and shop I wouldn't give up Prime because it is just too darn helpful!

Are prime prices different depending on where you live? I just checked and it would be $129.00/year to subscribe. The amount for free shipping is now $49.00. I was tempted when it was $99.00 and sometimes $79.00 as a promotion, but now not sure. What kind of a gadget is needed to watch prime movies, etc.?

My MIL has my prime password and email. She has her own house set up and linked to her own credit card w/in my account. She also has her grandkids' addresses in there. And we have our house in PA, our house in FL, and my DH office. We also add addresses randomly, like when I needed to send something to my cabinet maker or when my MIL bought a gift for her friend. So you can have more addresses than just 3.

Orchidrain, I think the $129/year is if you pay monthly. If you pay a year upfront it's $99. Totals on the stuff you buy may have state sales tax added depending where you live, and that makes a difference. I was kind of surprised that when I bought Prime yesterday for $79, they added California sales tax.

Oh, thanks Linelle, for that clarification. Too bad I didn't see yesterday's deal, I think I would have gone with it. Still confused as to the streaming aspect of it.

You can watch Prime movies on your laptop, iPad, etc., but our Samsung TV has an Amazon video app, and we can add the movies from the laptop and put them in our queue and load them up on the TV. it is not a newer flat screen so most TV's should have it.

We watch Prime movies on our big screen TV using a Panasonic blu-ray player. It has apps for Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime and a ton of others.

We have had prime for years, even before they offered streaming. Somehow I received my first year free and there has been no looking back. What I like the most is not having to drive around looking for whatever it is I am trying to buy, it always seems to be a challenge. That said I do review prices between other stores/websites such as Target, and Home Depot, for example Amazon does not even come close to meeting the price I pay for bird seed through Home Depot. Even with shopping other websites and locally for many things, Amazon is a huge timesaver and worth the money for me.

If you have a college student in your family you can get a discounted student prime account, I think you just have to give their .edu address? It's 50% off regular price. My account has been getting student discount for 7 years now, as both of my sons linked their school addresses into my account, I think? It is a great way to get college text books, either renting or purchasing, much cheaper than the university bookstores, we have found.

Thank you for the info, I have college students and we are up for renewal in January

I have a question about videos. We are very interested in the Prime account being open to three different people and addresses. All three of us are paying for the full price for Prime right now and would love to be able to share, thus reducing the cost to each of us.

My question, right now, is about video watching. Can all three of us sign in at the same time and watch different videos?

Late to the question, but YES. Unequivocally YES.

We also just got Amazon lockers near us, so if we are ordering something more valuable, we will try it out. This past week we ordered exciting items like a particular brand of mustard and plug adapters for me to use in China.
