O/T: First Snows Here!

What a change!

After record warmth yesterday with temperatures reaching 71°F, we are now, after only one day, slightly below average with our first snow of the season falling. We experienced a drop in temperatures of over 30° over the course of about eight hours.

Last night before the cold front barreled through, we had quite a lightning storm and downpour.

Pardon the low poor quality image, though. What looks like mist is really snow.

Our season is truly well and done. Time to bust out the books and work on that fantasy rose list!

Brrrr! What a shock! 30 degree drop in just a day! I can't even imagine! Time for that mulled cider Cynthia was talking about. It's a rose respite for a few months. Have fun fantasy window shopping roses! ;)

    Thank you so much!

It really is amazing: T-shirt and sunshiney warm one day, and snow with blustery winds the next! Brr!

That mulled cider sure sounds great; I'll probably have a nice cup of tea instead, though, knowing me.

I absolutely love rose window shopping! I've been prowling ARE, RVR, Regan's, and a couple others. One of my favourite fantasies is of being in a more benign climate with warm climate roses such as mighty teas, Chinas, and Noisettes in my garden. For now I'll have to enjoy my rugosas, gallicas, Austins, and odd ball HT and florries!

From iced tea to hot cocoa overnight! Yep, I was in short sleeves and coatless yesterday. Today I'm in my parka with hat and gloves, lol! We knew it couldn't last forever but it could have eased us into the season a little better.

That's great! So true about the lack of courtesy for a gentle shift. I was out and about on my weekend off and picked up a hot chocolate from Mickey D's! Sounded fantastic ahead of my tea.

I promise to keep you updated about my Zone Pushing Adventure with Mutabilis.

Your pics are so wintery. We had the same here in Cincy going from almost 80 to a high in the 30s today with rain and wind all night. Brrrr. I couldn't muster the courage to go for a run as I don't even have my long running pants out yet and with the change being so abrupt I feel like I need multiple pairs! However, I still have a few roses that aren't affected at all, such as Viking Queen, New Dawn, Munstead Wood and an unknown Austin. The polys are all still slowly blooming, as well. Dark Desire's buds and blooms freeze-dried on the other hand. I wonder why that is?

Now it's time to get some indoor projects done and dream about Spring roses. ; )

Vaporvac I wonder if where you have Dark Desire in your yard there is a cold microclimate. I have been looking for the coldest areas of my yard for Village Maid since she prefers a colder zone, so I have been studying the factors of microclimates in yards. Areas that tend to be colder may be a little lower... or have a bit more wind. But there are actually a lot of factors. It's fascinating! Take note if that area seems to have more frost often.... it's probabaly a cold spot! :)

Wow, does that look familiar Kelly. Stay safe.

Awakened by the sound of the village snow plow scraping my road this morning at 6 a.m. We have several inches of the white stuff here in the tip of Michigan's mitten where it's currently 27 deg. F., headed for a high today of 30! Brrrr. And to think that on Friday I took the dogs for a bike ride without even a jacket on!

It's pretty much no snow here by Lake Erie & Lake Ontario, we didn' t get much snow (less than 1"), I really really want it, but an hr south of us -ski country is getting about 1' of snow, and they won't share. I missed walking in the snow.......it's 33F right now, will be 28F tonight. I moved 39 potted rose trees in the garage yesterday, will have to get some mulch next weekend. Winter is finally here.......

So far here near the state line, we don't have real accumulation, yet. I had heard up to three inches!

We're currently a crisp 33°F with strong, gusty winds.

This may sound crazy, but I miss the snow. I lived in MN in between TX and OR. Mi Green Thumb, the 24 hour temperature drop reminds me of North TX when a blue northern hits. I was visiting relatives one December when the temperature plummeted from 70 degrees to 28 as overnight snow and ice covered the landscape and airports shut down. Thank you all for the snow photos. Portland has been experiencing oddly warm temperatures until a few days ago. I hope we get even a little snow this winter. Carol

We had the same kind of temperature drop - record temperatures of 80 on Wednesday and into the 20's by Friday night. Welcome to Nebraska, eh? Western and northern Nebraska had as much as 8 inches of snow, and as close as 2 hours west of us there was snow last week. We just barely missed it, but I'm now happily enjoying a belated fall. Sadly, I was out of town for the one single week that my Japanese maple decided to turn red. It must have turned and dropped all its leaves in that week, as it's now bare.

Ah well, planning plenty of mulled cider and yes - hot herbal tea - for the weekend. Like Seil, we went from iced tea to hot cocoa overnight. It FINALLY feels like Thanksgiving, which means I'm allowed to stay inside and hibernate looking through rose catalogs now. All but a few hundred bulbs planted and that'll be done while the turkey cooks on Thanksgiving.

I agree with you Carol - I wouldn't want a winter without some snow. I'm OK with not having any yet, since first snow is supposed to be a 1" dusting on Christmas Eve in my ideal scenario, but I'd miss snow if it weren't there. I'm surprised that North Texas got as cold as that so early in the winter, but that's the Central Plains for you I guess.

    Happy fall - finally!

    Cynthia

We had 10 inches of snow two weeks ago but it's gone now and the sun shines again on the green grass. Temps vary between 48 and 50 but we still hope for snow at ChristmasI am going to Paris on Friday for a few days and had hoped for warmer weather there but it seems it's about the same as here in the middle of Sweden.

My husband and I will celebrate our golden wedding and make the trip a sentimental journey and stay in the same area as on our first trip to Paris 51 years ago, before we were married. We will visit Delbard's little Paris shop on the right bank almost opposite our hotel on the left bank. I don't think they sell many roses at this time of the year but perhaps we'll get another of Delbard's own make of pruners, perfect for small hands.
