We custom-made this walnut counter top for our client - so there is no supplier that I can refer you to. The counter top was treated with butcher-block oil. It is delicate surface and this is something we discussed at length with our client before going ahead with this application. But the look speaks for itself!

By delicate, do you mean hard to maintain? I am looking into wood for my island but am worried about the life of the product on a location that will often see a lot of use. Are there more durable wood species out there that might not scratch or dent as easily?

There are other wood species that, when used in their "butcher block" form would be more durable. Walnut in this case is very delicate and would tend to scratch & burn easily (so you could not place a hot pot or kettle directly on the surface). Maple would be a better wood for this application! But any wood is going to be more delicate than a stone, granite, quartz, stainless, glass or other surface because of the softness of the wood.

We have got walnut and although it does look amazing I wish I had done a little more research as it is quite allot if work to maintain. Have now opted for not being to precious with it and then lightly sanding an replying it when it gets really scratched. Not sure I this is right thing to do - but only way I can manage it. Friends who have had lighter, harder wood have had a much easier time.
