Here are a few picks for rugs. Will you be adding a couple more chairs?

I would select a rug by first figuring out the size you need. You can put painter's blue tape on your floor about 6" behind legs of sofa and come out to where you might have a couple chairs on other side of coffee table. Then, place a piece of tape about 12" from fireplace hearth and go to other side of room to go at least to that far edge of the sofa about 12" further if you can. Then measure. This will give you an idea of size. I estimate that you need at least a 6x9' rug and probably 8x8 square or 9x12, just depending on the actual size of the room. I can't tell from just your pictures. I would pick out colors from your fabric, and I think I see some cream and perhaps some burgundy which is why I selected these pieces. These are just "examples" of what could work. Color on monitors are very imprecise to you have to determine what colors you want. The room looks like the floors are dark, the fireplace is black stone I think so a bit of light on the floor my be appealing.

The first one was very traditional. This one is a bit more modern, but has great colors and might liven up your space a bit. You could pull the deep teal green from this rug and put a similar color couple of pillows on your sofa to tie things together.

As for lighting, you need either a couple floor lamps for either end of the sofa, or a chandelier? I wonder in looking at this space, if it wouldn't be better to move your sofa to face the fireplace and put the chair to the right side, coffee table between fireplace and sofa and add an additional chair. Then you could do a floor lamp beside the chair toward the fireplace wall, and a end table with a lamp. The rug would fit length-wise in front of the fireplace to under the front legs of the sofa.

Here is rough sketch of what I mean. Behind the sofa could be a narrow "sofa table" for some decorations. Room is very bare feeling right now. Floor lamp beside chair at window area, and a second chair, small scale, so you could seat 4 for coffee, etc. and a chat before dinner. In the far right corner I would put a tall palm to balance the grandfather's clock on the other side. While I am rearranging, I would remove all but perhaps 3 items from the mantel. A line of small things makes everything look small and it is out of balance with the mirror. You could use a tall vase with some tall seasonal flowers, one on each side of mirror and they could overlap the mirror a bit. Or two or three (two on one side and one on the other) thin candlesticks in black to put beside the mirror. Should be at least 12" high and with candles higher, at 3 different heights. I'll find a photo to give you inspiration!

Notice the 3 candlesticks -- 3 different heights, odd number of items always best.

Thin candlesticks and thin vases with picks of flowers. Simple and clean. You can take some of the items you have on the mantel currently (is that a clock?) and put on the new sofa table behind the sofa if you rearrange things a bit. The clock and 2 framed photos and perhaps one book stack in the middle and that is all you need. Clock on left side facing into fireplace, stack of maybe 3 books with interesting titles or color bindings that work in the space, and two framed pictures on the right one in front of the other staggered.

Thank you Flo. My first question is "why are you still awake at 12:30?
I really like the rug. Where do i order it from?
I have 2 of the large chairs plus matching ottoman and the love seat. I also have 3 small tables I could use. Would I be able to just use table lamps?

I will go out and buy the things for the mantel this weekend. I think the black candle sticks is the best to tie that together.

Will need to find a narrow table for behind the love seat. Will look for that also

Thank you again for taking your time to help me with this crazy room. I also love how you have decorated your beautiful home.

I am a nite owl! I don't know which rug you like but if you click on the "more info" it will take you to the page that will give you further detailed information. If you print out pictures, you can take to local rug stores and show them the picture and see if they have same or similar.

If you could take some photos of the other pieces, then I could help you decide what you can use and what might not fit. I wouldn't overcrowd this room. It would take away from the neat features. I can't read your nice drawing. Too small and light. there is a box with lines through it on the longer dining room wall? Is that a radiator?

Flo, that would be the tv cabinet. It is solid oak and weighs about 1000 lbs

Hi Flo, here are some more furniture picture. The square coffee table is about 3 ft square.
Please, I don't want you staying up late working on this.

Thanks Frostedsleet! I think I posted photos I took rather than directly from Houzz. That is the one I like the best, how about you Harley? It comes in bigger sizes too, so you will have to tell us what size you think you need. But we have to figure out furniture layout and where that TV is going. Can you move the TV to the left side of fireplace? And move the grandfathers clock to where the TV is now?? That might work. I have to lay it out to scale to be sure. Then we can determine size of carpet. But you could order small rug sample while we are figuring things out. OK, I am done for tonight! Really!

Had a great day! I notice you have a beautiful Tiffany style lamp squeezed on that little table. We need to find a proper place and table for that. Could we put it in the center of your window seat?
Would you be willing to get new TV Console? If we rearrange furniture, the TV needs to be moved. How wide is TV.
Hi Flo, yes that is the carpet I liked.
Will look at room to see if tv console can be moved when I get home around 10:00.
So glad to hear you had a nice Thanksgiving.

    Hi Flo,
Do you mean that the Lamp would go in front of the window and
Open up the gate leg table it is sitting on?

The cabinet would need to stay in that area. Could it just be moved down to the left and turned out facing the room? There isn't any where else I could put it.

The lamp has a stained glass shade right? The table it sets on should be about 4" wider than the shade at least. The gate leg end table doesn't look high enough for that lamp? Could you stand in dining room and take photo toward window so I can get a perspective on that wall.
Hi Flo, here are some measurements facing the window.
    Left wall 4ft 2in
    Window10ft 11 in. Window depth 1ft 4 in
    Right wall 4ft 4 in

Table 2 ft high and table to is 27 in across

    Lamp shade is 16 in.

I feel as I'am taking up too much of your time...please let me know if this is so, Harley

Beautiful table and lamp. That is much better with the leaves up. If we do decide to rearrange furniture, then I think we might be able to get this in the center of your front window which would look really lovely from outside as well as inside. It could be between two chairs in front of window. The table is a bit too low for the sofa, which is why it would work better between the chairs. You want a table to be about the height of the arms of furniture so it is easy to reach from seating in a sofa to a table on the side. Have you had a chance to measure for the TV? We could also try it on an angle in the left corner of the fireplace wall. That way, people in chairs or sofa could view TV. You aren't taking too much of my time. I love doing this and as you know am a night owl. But back to my College Football games! Later!

Flo, This is a room that we don't watch TV often. My Hubby has 5 brother's and I have 2 and then there is all their boys who gather in there to watch big sports games. I put the big Christmas Tree in here and we all gather here on that day.

Before my Grandma passed...she my great Aunt and all her Church friends would show up after Church and enjoy my garden's. Now that she is gone and the weather is getting cold, I just wanted a room that they could still come to. Even if we are not here my Aunt knows where everything is and has a key.

This furniture belonged to Grandma and was hand crafted for her in Italy. Nothing like the rest of our home. It is probably about 20 years old and I just can't part with it. Perhaps I should just start the New Year off right and sell it.

I have nowhere else to put that monster Hutch. I have the rest of the bedroom set in spare bedrooms upstairs. The Hutch won't even fit up the stairs it is so big. We have left those easy push pads under it so Hubby and I can move it around, maybe I talk sweet to him and he will do that for me.

    Hope your teams win, Harley

Don't sell! For the times when the gang is there you can move seating around to TV. But the other pieces could work as I laid out and perhaps draw you into space more for a quiet time, reading or tea time! So leave TV where it is for now. I think it is a wonderful room you can show off with a few new touches! Don't give up. My team :( but second fav won :).
