Cabinets.com is misleading everyone.

I am concerned with buying cabinets that have wood from China. The deerfeild line is states that they are manufacture and assembled in USA but that doesn't mean all the materials they use come from the US. I specifically asked them what country was the their plywood coming from and they did finally confirmed that it does sometimes come from overseas. That to me means china. They did not offer any more information. Does anyone else have info on this. I like there cabinets but feel they are misleading consumers in to thinking what "Made in America" really means.

I have no idea where the plywood at my local big box store comes from; do you? One does the best one can.

That's a good question. I really didn't think about any of this until I starting looking for flooring and read all about the lumber liquidators problems. There are plenty of US manufacturers of plywood. But everyone is always trying to save a buck.

Do we seriously really know where anything absolutely positively comes from these days? Not likely. Not everyone tells the truth, wording is tricky often to mislead.

Actually plywood in the bog box stores has stickers that tell you where it's made.

If it is important to you, you can nearly always find out where products and their components are made.

If made in the US is important to you, take a look at Barker cabinets.

The cheap cabinet grade plywood at my HD comes from china. You can see it on the label.

To the OP thank you for asking

US made and sourced was important to us when we bought our cabinets. We went with Barker.

    Wow

    Impressively thorough answer.
I'm not buying cabinets, but rather building my own. I did find this interesting, though!
Nice to see a vendor taking such time.

Great comments, Cabinet.com. It is great to hear that you are a "real" made in the USA company. Good for you.

I run into the same issues with sink manufacturing. Companies like Kohler, Elkay and many others give the impression all of their sinks are made in the US. That is not the case. You have to ask where each model is made. Many are made in China. I go out of my way to source domestically for our copper and stainless. It is much more expensive, but I like keeping things "at home".

Before we all go thanking Cabinets.com on "being honest", take a look at their website, specifically when they discuss "their" manufacturing.... The use vague words and somewhat misleading statements trying to get you to think they are the manufacturer. "Tour our factory" in the videos section... "We pay close attention to the joints on every door......" Watch our construction videos that display how the main components of a Deerfield cabinet are made in our plant"

Sure one could made the claim that is not a lie, however, its not exactly the truth either. Its not THEIR plant, they arent watching anything being made, etc. They are resellers of cabinets being made by another company. That is all....

Then go ask them who the manufacturer is.... Bet you wont get an answer. Just like I didnt.

@aceshigh73 - that's like saying that Apple is just a reseller of Foxconn's products.

@freeoscar no it isn't. You just proved that's it's different. You used one of apple's contract manufacturers in your statement.
Apple doesnt hide this. Sears doesn't hide that their Kenmore appliances aren't really made by sears (or their craftsman tools, etc). But I'm guessing cabinets.com won't have a KCMA code on their cabinets to look up who made them. They just say "they follow all kcma guidelines". They aren't kcma certified. If I am wrong their rep will correct me here.

Edited to add that on their website they say all Deerfield cabinets from cabinets.com are KCMA certified. So im guessing a code has to exist someplace. But cabinets.com or Deerfield or Kitchen Resource Direct or KRD is not listed anyplace on the kcma.org site

Deerfield is made by Masterbrand. It is the same as Diamond/Thomasville/Kemper/Schrock.

I have Deerfield from cabinets.com. I love them.

The Deerfield line is made by Kith Kitchens, in Haleyville AL. They also do frameless under the name Eudora.

If you find a brick and mortar dealer it will probably be cheaper than buying online. And you have more custom options available if needed.

From what I researched, all of their lines are built by Kith Kitchens!

The whole 'buy american' is nuts - we are one world, believe it or not - and that is a plus.

Blockchain technology is supposed to provide consumers and manufacturers the chain of custody documentation which permits us to know where the components are sourced... from raw materials to final product. So, if you really want everything to be made in xxx but not yyy, then ask for blockchain authentication. That being said, it'll probably blow your mind to discover that complex products with hundreds of components may have fingerprints from a dozen or more countries.

FYI: on 05/10/2022, the BBB rating of cabinets.com is 4.85/5.00. They use Blum drawer glides and hinges (top of the line), source their hardwoods, paints, finishes, hardwood veneer, and most all of their plywood from North America. On some occasions when supply chain bottlenecks occur from North American sources, they may use some imported plywood and MDF. But all in all, they appear to be exceptionally honest about their products. If you're like me, you've spent tens of hours trying to figure out what, precisely, you're buying, and whether you're paying 10% or 90% of you purchase price to resellers. Who wants to learn later on that brand xxx and brand yyy are virtually the same product? I sure don't! So, maybe cabinets.com is reselling Deerfield/Kith/someone else, maybe with different names for the style and color options than USAcabinets.com (who won't sell to customers directly). From what I've read and seen about their products, an apples to apples comparison with other maufacturers has cabinets.com coming out with lower prices. So, their business model of consumer-direct service and sales looks pretty darned impressive to me. Living out in the SF Bay Area, it's impossible to find a local cainet maker who will fabricate what cabinets.com does for less than 3 times the cost. They all want to earn $300,000/year, and end up hiring quasi-skilled laborers to do the actual work anyways.

    Interesting first two posts.........................

"aceshigh73" is just a nay sayer with an axe to grind. He/she gives just enough misleading information to start and fan the flames. He/she splits hairs in a straw man argument hoping to sound more knowledgeable and to divert the reader's attention from doing their own fact checking. Does Cabinets.com state they own a factory? No. Do they say "at our Alabama factory"? Yes but that doesn't denote ownership of the factory any more than Apple owns Foxxcon. The factory follows Cabinets.com procedure and protocol for their orders. That makes it their factory for that order. This is an industry accepted practice, and it is also widely accepted that the store/seller will tout the factory as "theirs". This is the splitting hairs strawman argument he makes. Cabinets.com was more than forthcoming when I inquired. They also stated that they are not a member of KCMA because KITH is and because the product comes from KITH, they can assert it is made at a verified KCMA facility.

    Seriously, who cares?

A lot of interesting discussion here. At its core, the OP may misunderstand the word “manufacture.”

Frankly, if the product is well built and the customer service is exemplary I might take a chance. I have been going through scads of research on what cabinets to buy for my upcoming remodel. If was was 20 years younger I'd build my own boxes and get high grade doors and drawer boxes from a local manufacturer. Problem is, I'm not........When the cabinetry is the most money lay out on a remodel, you have to care.
