Question regarding those babies we start

Obviously, I could trade or give them away. I was wondering if anyone had tried taking them to a farmer's market (in first flower perhaps) and what they had charged for them if so?

It would seem from my first investigations, selling isn't worth my time, unless perhaps on Ebay?

I really don't like discarding plants that aren't at least in decline, so...they must have homes somewhere. By spring, my windowsills will be overflowing.

We had a Show in a nice small nursery - and the owner approached us if we want to sell her AVs, She would buy them for $3 from us - and resell. But she wanted large blooming plants. Since I am growing under the lights....I will be paying the electric bill ... I will be losing money on each one.

You can sell on eBay, you can sell on Etsy - and you can send smaller plants. 2 issues - packing is quite involved and right now the season is over - too cold to ship.

So - if you approach some local florist - they probably will take them off your hands. But - since they will go for a resale - you need to have them "finished" - good size, symmetrical and in bloom.

If is not about money - but more of a desire to share plants and may be involve the locals in this hobby - think about donating them to a church fund raiser or similar event - you have them go for the good cause.

Hee, not what I wanted to hear, but more what I expected to hear. I do think the church fundraiser may be a good idea. Thanks Irina...anyone else ?

Hmm, Rachel from Rachel's Reflections mentioned that her grand-daughter would set up a violet stand and sell her extras. Are there any stray entrepreneurial children around?. If they are starts you can put pictures of the mother plants next to them.

Why don't you just have people private message you if they are interested in purchasing them? There used to be a guy on here who had Twinkle Blue and every year when he cut it back to the soil level (it grew in a terarrium) he would just put it out there and people got a hold of him. As long as the transaction information takes place privately, I see no harm.

This is a violet forum. What better place to offer our extras?????? Just sayin', Rosie

Just right now, I wouldn't even try to ship from Texas..they're getting a cold spell. However, by Feb, things usually warm up here in the South. Of course, you have to think about where you're shipping to.

Not Point Barrow... End of March - beginning of April you can send to most of the places with an extra insulation. Earlier - you wear T-shirt - and your addressee is freezing, week later - you have it in reverse... Weather.com helps.

True one has to be aware of cold weather. But there is plenty of time from spring to fall !!!!!

And the guy I was referring to put the notice out in spring and let me tell you he didn't have enought cuttings to fill everyone's order!!! After all,,,,Twinkle Blue IS a nice little trailer!!!!!

I guess a person just has to time it for the weather. And yes,,,brrrrr it is cold here but NOT as cold as it could be !!! I am not complaining,,,,,,yet ! Rosie

Yes, we've had peculiarly mild winters for several years now. I hope Mother Nature doesn't try to even the score any time real soon. My passionfruit vines emerged above ground last year in February and grew without damage from thence on. They're still green and pretty lush now...though flowering has ceased.
