Master bedroom

Hi everyone! My husband recently moved down to New Orleans and I will be moving down shortly after. This is the first home we bought and we are getting to start fresh with decor for our bedroom. We used our old decor in the guest bedroom. Our walls are painted SW Breezy and I am having a really difficult time with that color. At times I think its a bit too icy for me and other times I think it is nice and relaxing. Maybe once I get the right furnishings in the room and artwork it will be less icy blue if I can add some warm accents to the space. Here is the photo from the listing. Pretty cute but no furniture so it looks a lot bigger than it really is.

The only thing we bought for the room so far is bedding and maybe we didn't pick the best color I am starting to think (but I am open to changing the duvet cover although it is linen and very comfortable) Here is the furniture we have in the room now, it is all second hand furniture I got next to nothing and painted them navy blue and added pewter knobs to them...again now I am rethinking the color I painted them or if I even want them in the master bedroom and would just put them in the other guest bedroom.

Sorry the quality isn't very good and our room is a mess (husband is busy and I haven't been able to make it down much)

Some ideas I had was to add a storage bed to the room, I like one with a bit taller headboard. One I was thinking was this off Wayfair. https://www.wayfair.com/Southampton-Storage-Bed-HOHN2915-HOHN2915.html

Personally I would really like it if the drawers were just on the sides of the bed but I can't seem to find one in a reasonable price range with a tall headboard and tufted. My husband isn't a fan of the wingback but I think its perfect for New Orleans and he doesn't care what I do with the space.

I was also thinking about adding a corner desk (white perhaps?) to the same wall as the dresser and the entrance. Or I was thinking about adding a writing desk to the left side of the bed instead of a night stand with a cute accent chair. Any thoughts on color and what type I should do my furniture. Perhaps a storage ottoman at the base of the bed. Later on, I would love to add hanging lights to each side of the bed and not have a lamp at our bedside. I really don't want a room with much clutter. Again, I am pretty open to ideas! Just need help getting colors to make the walls less icy and help deciding on what color I should paint the existing furniture or if I should get new and if so what color should I get? Would the bed I am looking at on Wayfair go with the room color? I want the room to feel warm, cozy, clean with a touch of glam. Thanks everyone!

Thank you so much for the response! I am glad you like the idea of the writers desk next to the window, I was unsure if I wanted that vs a corner desk but a writers desk seems more sophisticated. I just think about space, do you think a corner desk would make it feel less heavy on the left side of the room vs having a writers desk and dresser on the left side of the room? I was thinking at the base of the bed I would add one medium sized ottoman or two small sized ottomans as well.

As for repainting the bedroom I guess I am a bit nervous because off our master is our bathroom...I guess they don't have to be the same colors. I do like the color you suggested though and I will look into it.

So very thankful you think a taller wing style headboard is the way to go....that is exactly what I have been trying to tell my husband who is colorblind and not creative. LOL Never thought of a velvet headboard, I will check that out. I am really set on the idea of a bed with the storage underneath. Honestly, I can use the entire dresser to myself. hehe I was thinking if I did the bed I posted and then repainted the furniture a linen gray color it it might tone the room down? If not then maybe I should go back and repaint the walls.

I don't have a specific piece of artwork I want to use. Although I do have a beautiful painting that I got from my mother as a wedding gift of Santorini (we got married there) but its bright blue and white with a gorgeous yellow/orange/coral sunset....doesn't really go anywhere in the house. :`(

Thank you for your advice and I appreciate your time!!

Definitely getting the banded roman shades as you suggested, I think that would be perfect.

Here is a bed that doesn't have wings but is has a decent heights in the headboard and has nail heads...which one do you like? https://www.wayfair.com/Republic-Design-House-Audrey-Storage-Platform-Bed-1074-B-RPDH1026.html

Really just wish I knew which bed to get because I feel like it makes sure so much of the room. Which bed do you like better so far?

And there is this one as well, only thing is lack of drawers on the sides of the bed. Two really isn't enough.

I'm not thinking you will be happy with the gray. Your bath looks gorgeous and don't worry - it will just feel like a deeper more masculine shade of the bedroom if you do repaint. The white headboard is going to fight the white white trim . . the gray is not a great color for this room imho. Both beds are neat tho - happy with either one.

Maybe that is why I can't seem to make a decision...I feel like white might be too much white and gray may not be perfect as well. I have been searching for a bed for months now...finally thinking I had it narrowed down. lol

Here are a few picture of ideas I had saved. This is such a dating task for me! The other rooms have went smoothly this one I have no idea what to do with.

I think you need a light color rug for the dark floor.

    Some inspiration, love the colour

Yes, I agree. I guess now I need to figure out what color I need to repaint the bedroom.

I love the second bed you posted! Is that in your home? If so where did you get it?

Don't repaint work with what you have, it's nice

That's what my friend says as well...so hard, I just want someone to tell me what to do. All the other rooms were so much easier.

Hello, I love your wall colour and your room is so pretty.

I think you just need an accent colour, maybe a soft pinks for a sophisticated and soft feel.

The proportions of your dresser are wrong for the room. A longer, lower one would work better. I love the bed you choose from Wayfair.

I have done a little mock up for you, using the real estate photograph as it was clearer. (By the way, their curtains are too short!)

Start by adding a larger rug under the bed, change out the ceiling fan for something more contemporary.

I think maybe a different dresser all together might be a good idea. Before adding a bigger piece of furniture I do want to mention I considered doing a free floating corner desk to the room because our home lacks a office. Do you think if I added a corner desk/desk as a night stand and a larger dresser I would have too much furniture in the room? Thanks so much for doing that with the room. It was very nice of you to do that for me. :). I totally agree about the curtains, they didn't stay with the house, nor the bed or ottoman...I am basically starting from scratch in this room. Just ready to make some decisions, but it's so hard to! I want our master bedroom to be a room we put a lot of thought into and hopefully not change for a long time!

Seems to me you could use some royal purple in this room! After all, you are in New Orleans the city of color! I definitely like the writing table idea.

I think some soft but interesting colors and pieces would be great for your room. The walls won't mean so much if you couple them with nice bedding, some interesting pillows and night stands. The dresser would be painted silver to help bring some variation in finishes to your room. The dark color and the size of it, just doesn't quite work. Some mirrored night stands might be interesting. But start with nailing down your headboard and go from there.

Nice royal purple pillow on a off white/blue/gray bedding would bring that pop of color, or you could just go monochromatic.

Lots of ways to go. Any preferences? I'll take down anything you don't like just let me know. Great room, just be careful to keep furniture to small scale and maybe multifunctional.

Breezy is not a light color. It has an LRV of 41. It does not matter that I think it is pretty. You are saying it is dark and possibly too cool for you. Your pictures make your room look gray. Breezy is a blue that has a little green in it. I made this image at the SW website so people can get a better idea of the color. If you have lived with it for awhile and are not happy with it then you can easily change it.

I used this sample room as it was the only one with a dark floor.

Does your husband like the color?

Please share your possible bed choices.

Flo Mangan thank you so much. I agree with keeping furniture multifunctional and small. I am glad you like the writers desk, I keep going back and forth with the idea of a writers desk vs built in corner desk. Ill post a few pics of the corner desk I was thinking, or two of them I like but for different reasons and was considering having them made. I like the first picture you sent, so pretty! love the double ottomans at the end of the bed. Also, I like the idea of purple..very pretty. I am attracted though to the colors in the first room, just seems like a place I would love to sleep or study at the table.

emmarene I think we will be forced to change the wall color. I just don't know which one to go with. I may need to live with it a little longer as I haven't actually gotten to live in the house yet...I will be moving at the end of the month so maybe ill make a decision then. It looks gray on FaceTime and to my husband....who is colorblind...all colors. So he doesn't care what I do to the room color....although he is colorblind I do think he has a great ability to see variations in colors vs me.

I don't know if i should go a floating corner desk or a writers desk for a nightstand. I like the last desk, but my husband likes the desks that are straight...not rounded. Would love others opinions. :)

You need to be careful of "overloading" this room with furniture. A built-in would not be my first choice. Too limiting. Also, really think about the size of the room and what you really need in it first. Do you need a dresser? Or would great closet organizer be sufficient? You need night stands for sure, and probably something to sit on at the end of the bed? If you need storage, you could get a bench with a lid for end of bed and that would provide some extra storage for off season bedding, etc. If you just want a desk for occasional sit down with lamp top, I would definitely do a small simple writer's table. Not a true desk. The writers table can double as a make-up table too. There are some reasonably priced ones, including mirrored ones that might be nice as well. So, floating corner desk will take up a lot of space but not give much work surface. A writer's desk as a night stand might work, but usually it is best to have your night stand sit at about the same height as the top of your mattress. Not sure the height of your mattress, but usually around 28" or so. Desk tops are usually about 30" so might be too high, but this is a question you have to answer for yourselves and what works best. For me, I don't want a desk "in the bedroom" because I wouldn't want to disturb the "sleeper"; and so unless I was using it during the day when no one else was in the room, I probably wouldn't use it. I would look for a space outside the bedroom for desk space. Sorry, I was kind of all over the place there, but just trying to give you additional insights as you make decisions on this room.
