What should I put behind our fake dormer Windows?

We are building a new house that has fake dormers for aesthetic purposes. The house is a rustic craftmans style. My dilemma is what should I do behind the windows and should the Windows open? I have read that some people use some type of black foam, some use black paint, etc... I live in south Louisiana where it gets pretty hot with high humidity. I have attached a picture of what my house will look like except it will be flipped

Skip the fake dormers. The house would look so much better without them. And without the stone skirt up above the actual foundation level too. A simple cottage like that is no where near a Craftsman style. But it is attractive if you don't attempt to tack on fake geegaws. Like the timber bracing.

Regarding whether the windows should open: are they in a room or an attic. If in an attic I always like to have at least two windows that will open if I can. If they are high up in a room where you can't reach them easily you could always do an expensive shutters.

They are not in a room or attic they are fake dormers .
Just for looks.

Ditto to what Sophie posted. Strip off the unnecessary (and unattractive), put the saved money into your landscaping.

HI -- Either have real dormers or save money and not have the fake . Fake ones just make problems . If you have a real dormer , do a shed dormer on the big side only . Three little fake ones look silly to me .

We have one real dormer and one fake on Acadian style. But it was closed up without access to the window (locked) so that the unfinished inside is visible outside. Any ideas to cover window? Southern window in LA sun means high heat.

Have exterior dark window tint applied to window. That's what we are doing to our fake dormers. If someone tells you that window tint cant be applied to exterior side of window, they are wrong. There are window tints made specially for that purpose.
