We just purchased an older home (1960) that has an aging hydronic radiant floor system (only in part of the house--the other parts have hydronic wall radiators). The current heat is "spotty"--some parts of the floor are warm and some feel cold. The system is powered by an old, smelly, NOISY oil boiler. We considered removing the oil boiler and just converting the whole house to a split ductless system. We live in the Pacific NW and the weather is fairly moderate. Here's my concern: the house is on a concrete slab, and when the hydronic floor heat is turned off, the floors are COLD. Since we are doing a complete overhaul of the house--really, the whole main floor is being torn out, should I replace the current hydronic system with a new one? Will an electric boiler be quieter than an older oil boiler? The house is 2300 sf on the main floor and 800 upstairs.
