Jacaranda seedling

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi,

i have a jacaranda grown from seed indoors due to weather in uk. I don't want to create a bonsai it's just a little project I want to see if I can get it to survive outside if i grow it large enough before hand.

anyway it's now 1 year 4 months old from seed and 112cm tall.

issue is so far it's only been growing straight up.

When does a jacaranda start growing side branches?

Thanks

lack of light.. can make things etoliate ... stretch out ...

talk to us about how you provide enough light.. for a tree ...

and how about a pic ....

it seems way out of your zone.. but i dont know exactly where you are.. zone wise ... how hard are you pushing zone here??? ... 2...3....4...

but size really shouldnt matter whether it should be able to live outside.. IF it were zone appropriate ... if it was properly hardened off first ...

experiments are fun.. do so ...

It is in a south facing conservatory it's getting as much light as I can possibly provide atm.

im not sure about a zone as I'm in uk we don't had a hardiness map.

however we do get several days of frost a year.

The tree has stretched out quite a bit and does lose its lower leaves as it puts out new leaves up top. However there's only 5cm ish between nodes.

i can't take a pic atm but will later if needed

Sounds like typical jacaranda growth. It is common for them to be tall, thin and branchless for the first 2-3 years, even when grown in areas where they are outdoors year round. Branching comes with time.

Ah right thanks for that falcon it clears things up. I just thought it's getting tall really fast it's going to end up being 10ft tall with no side branching.

do you reckon it will eventually survive outside in uk if it gets large enough before putting directly outside?

Sean - I believe you live in Co Durham? Jacaranda will not grow outdoors even down where I am in the UK. The tree itself might survive in sheltered spots like central London or the S coast for a few years but is unlikely ever to get flowers because our summers are not hot enough.

BTW the advice is the same as when you asked in June and in July

I guess I'm just hoping someone has a surviving jacAranda here. It would be a shame to see it die!

our summers are getting hotter every year.

this summer just gone we have had temps of 35c for a couple of days and atleast 3 weeks in the 29/31 range. Which is scortching for us.

so far it is thriving in my conservatory which is why I asked the question here today when do they branch. I've read a post on here where someone said that there are two huge jacarandas somewhere down south that fully bloom in the uk?
