I think a nice drum light would look great! You can probably find one of a relatively good size for just a couple hundred dollars.

Can you DIY? If so, I'd use a chalk paint on the whole base, and add new globes to make it more french country. I can't find a good image, but the base would look like this:

Also - can the light be lowered? It appears too high for the room in the pic.

I had the same dilemma when we moved into our house. I found lighting stores overwhelming and cluttered. I spent a lot of time looking at photos on houzz and realized I really liked a lot of the lighting from Pottery Barn. I ended up buying the Hundi Lantern, Rustic Glass Pendants and the Clarissa Chandelier. I love them all with the only complaint being the amount of dust that collects in the bottom of the Hundi Lantern.
