So how high should I hang the painting? I think I am not going to touch the frame. If I decide down the road that I want something different, then I can just take this down and move it somewhere else. I would like to keep it regardless of where I use it. Thanks for all the input!

I suggest 6"s above the sofa for perfect eye level when you are seated.

I agree. I think it works nicely. Can you guild your lamp to tie in the painting and add a gold photo frame or two to shelves. I too can imagine pale blue curtains, maybe velvet on a gold pole. But perhaps not with a baby in the house!

I think it works very well! And it doesn't matter that the book shelves are modern, the picture is a one-of-kind piece.

The painting is quite nice. Please don't do anything to the frame. The rug is beautiful. I'd like to see this painting in the place of honor, above the fireplace (that placement looks too high for TV watching). What about putting the TV in one of the shelving units? And adding some other interesting objects on the other shelves?

I know a lot of folks are recommending hanging art 6" above sofas and chairs, however if you have a low back on your furniture, people will be knocking their heads on it...also, you want it out of reach of the baby if it stands up on the seat....

Pull the sofa out some from the wall if it's a problem.

The painting is fine in the room; however, I am not sure when it became fashionable to see a t.v. as a decor fixture. To me, it is like decorating with tissue boxes in a room. The detail of the ceiling in the room is lovely. My eye was drawn to the ceiling and fireplace and thus is the focal point of the room. RIght now, it looks cluttered. I think the painting belongs above the fireplace and the tv on the wall where you are currently showing the painting. The loveseat can be moved to the opposite wall (in front of the window) and the chair can be moved to the other side of the fireplace (it is not well placed for watching television anyway). Is there any chance you have a small or short armoire or any other piece of furniture to house the t.v. and accompanying cords and miscellaneous devices? If not, that is the next investment piece I would purchase. Regarding the bookshelves; applying a larger crown moulding around the tops would certainly help to unify this woodwork to the rest of the woodwork. It kind of looks like someone just tired of making decisions on trimming that whole wall. I would place greenery above the bookcases. If not, small matching and interesting plates mounted on the wall above the bookcases might be interesting.

I agree with what soupiepoupie said above, I think that arrangement would pull the room together much better, it does look a bit cluttered and awkward with the T.V. on top of the fire place. The piece of art would look much better there!!

I had thought of the tv on that wall, but then you can't see it from the kitchen which is opposite the fireplace. I am not crazy about it over the fireplace so I will still consider that. I am worried the painting will be too big above the fireplace. I'll have to measure.

Keep the painting with the red pillows;l

The pillows should be solid red no pattern.

Hang the picture…remove the flowered pillows.

paint the inside of your cabs the wall color and find red smalls for the shelves.

I like the print pillows and they work well with the painting.

You should paint the soffit and the center of the ceiling the wall color, or at least half strength. It will show your nice crown moulding up really well. Now it is just disappearing in the white paint. And I agree with soupioupie (how about getting another name, s.p.? ) that you should add some crown moulding/trim detail to the book cases.

Once you atually hang the painting, I think it will all come together for you. I actually do not think the sofa is so bad, a simple way to draw attention from the sofa is to use pillows or the draping of a softly folded throw over the arm of one of the sofas..either a teal blue or claret red, perhaps a plush velvety pile with fringe. It will also draw out the colors of your painting and rug. A few odd assorted brass candle holders with red candles (use a variety of sizes of candles) scattered in your shelves will compliment the gilt frame, whereas a bright gold tone would clash with the aged regalness of the gilt frame...perhaps add a brass candle quencher (one of those sticks with a bell that you smother the flame with). I think your room will be wonderfully cozy, especially with a fire :>)

Here is your picture, which I think works, with 4 more current frames.
Some frames are too large, just wanted to show you the colours.
I like the black, or dark charcoal frame best, but ultimately it's your choice.

I have no problem with the frame that's on it, but it was suggested to paint it and personally I'd rather see a new frame than painting the original one.

I tried it over the fireplace and it is just too big. The frame goes all the way to the crown molding. I'm guessing that's too big, right??

Agree with Helga, it's fine over the sofa. You can change the frame or leave it. I quite like the way a darker frame pulls in the other dark elements in the room, tv, black in rug, fp etc., and leads your eye into the picture but if money is tight and you are happy with the way it is then it's fine to leave it.

Also agree that crown moulding would look nice on the book cases as well as Helga's suggestion to paint the soffit a shade or two lighter than the walls, and the ceiling as well to make your crown mouldings pop. The ceiling could be as little as 10 - 15% of the colour but it would look lovely.

love your ceiling.. carolyn c is right about the soffit.. you add more style by doing the perpendicular part of that opening a shade darker than soffit, or matching the walls.. i wish you would put the tv down next to window on some low entertainment unit instead of so high up on the mantel (too filled up)..
why not move all those devices to the second top most shelf of the cabinet to hide those cables..

pinting above sofa, slip covers for sofa's in green, soft, long green curtains and DONE!

Surefit makes slipcovers in different styles, fabics and colors. Pier One is a good place to shop for pillows; the solid pillow below comes in a variety of colors, (I threw the other pillow in, as I think it is a fun accent)

If you dont like the gold finish of the picture frame, you could go over it lightly with bronze or silver glaze :-)

I have four grown children, so I understand why you do not want to invest in furniture right now! The slipcovers with the separate seat cushion cover stay in place pretty good; The one piece not so much! Just make sure (if you buy any) that they are machine washable. We had our TV over the fireplace for a few months, but my neck couldn't handle looking up all the time, so over the fireplace is pretty much a personal choice. Are the shelves in the built-ins fixed? Would you TV fit on top of the cabinet to the right? I would lose the light but use the picture...

I think your picture in its current frame looks good in your room.

I ended up hanging it in my dining room. You all gave so many helpful comments, but I just felt like my dining room needed some color. Now I just need to figure out what kind of chandelier to put in and what kind of lamps to go on the buffet!
