This is what it is currently. Our kitchen itself is like 17 feet. Dining room is 15.

Hard to tell with this sketch. I assume the hard lines are "as is" and the pencil lines are the "future"? Do you want a peninsula instead of an island? Sorry for all the questions, but just want to make sure I understand what you are saying. I would probably as a general rule, opt for the largest island I could get. You are just turning a small 1/4 turn to see into the living room. But I need a bit more info before I can be sure of anything! Can you show some photos of current spaces. Take them from as far back as you can so we can get some perspective.

Definitely have the island face the diner. The space looks large enough to take it. The office view is immaterial. Stand in the diner and look towards the kitchen and visualize. Take tape and mark out on the floor where you want everything and mark out the island. Look at lots of pictures of kitchens and islands for ideas.

I also agree with Flo to build the largest island you can. I am not a fan of peninsulas since they used to be very popular here and I had them in previous kitchens but find I have my flow restricted and end up walking around all the time. Also don't care for the look.

I am not a fan of peninsulas either, but if "line of sight" through the area is important, then it might be an option. A long peninsula could work but I can't see enough of that left side wall to see what is on it and it appears there is going to be a short wall between the dining room and kitchen. I would just do the large island myself. That would leave the ends open for transportation around the perimeter and movement into the dining area and living area.

We built this kitchen a couple of years ago for a friend and had to have the island side facing the dining room. We then curved the top and then did a pie cut in to give the seating area, ending with a glass under cabinet for display glasses. It looks good and there are no sharp corners to catch on

As you can see from the second picture my daughter had not yet made the copper extractor (she is actually a jeweler designer and goldsmith) nor had the seating been put in under the window

Why don't you remove the bench/pantry section and center the range on that wall, slide the fridge closer to the sink and install pantry cabinets where the fridge is currently drawn to make up the pantry storage. Now your hood is the focal point from the front of the house and you can rotate the island 90 degrees without loosing the size. I would also switch your dishwasher to the right of the sink unless you are left handed it is ergonomically incorrect. You may want to consider a small cabinet between the corner sink base and the dishwasher instead of a panel so you aren't trapped in front of the sink when the dishwasher door is open.

Is this a generic cabinet plan from your architect? I know you are no longer doing the bench but your island is pushed too far up and the walkway is very wide between the island and bench wall. There are some things in the layout that concern me.

Okay. So they do. The left side of the panorama is the view into the living room and the dining room. However the designers have my island facing the homeschool room-which I don't have a view into it either. I'm thinking about how to shorten the closet to have a set of double doors there to be able to open that up and see the kids either playing in the homeschool room which also is the playroom. The trouble with turning the island is that then the stove and refrigerator are at the end of the island. Also this makes my sink farther away from the middle of the island. Right now with the island facing the homeschool room is 9 ft/40 inches.

Panorama photos don't work here, because they distort and what we need is accuracy so we can make good recommendations based on those facts. Nice try though! I am quite concerned that you are this far along without a real viable plan! Yikes, this is a prescription for trouble. I suggest you really stop and figure things out now before you make some serious, costly errors. Get a good local designer who has done these types of construction projects to assist in rapidly defining your needs, wants and hopes and then get a definitive plan in place.
