Besides watering on lows, what about warming your orchids at low temps? Vandas need 50 and above. A few need low temps but most get what the vandas get, 50 and above. Some will tolerate 40's. I like to water at 60 and above. That means if the lows were 45 and it would warm to 60, I'm watering. I water every day baring real cold temps but to do that you need either mounted plants or terra cotta pots and lava rock medium. Otherwise they will get too wet and die. Many use plastic pots and water retaining medium and water every day is a no no.

It is hard to give advice without knowing the type(s) of orchid you are growing.

But one rule for winter that might be useful is only water on a morning when the day promises to be sunny. If you do that the orchid will be fairly dry by nightfall.

As far as warming my orchids, I'll either bring them in or cover them. I might not quite understand your question. I do water my orchids in the morning. Most of my orchids are either mounted or in clay pots with lava rock, not to mention the vandas that are in baskets.

I grow phals, oncidiums, vandas, dendros and cats, and I do water in the morning. I'm really not that fine with cold feet and don't want my babies too either!

Oli, If your plants were potted in plastic pots with water holding medium they would die of drowning. Your clay pots and lava rock allow your heavy hand on the hose. It is more work but I believe a better outcome...It is what I do.
