Family room makeover

I am doing some improvements to my family room and needs lots of advise on color combination, space planning, artwork and etc. The sofa is new from Ethan Allen, not sure I like the sofa but I'm stuck with it. I put in new hardwood floors, painted the walls gray, and installed crown molding.

Second time this week I'm recommending painting a fireplace white since your furniture is pretty formal and a red brick fireplace is more rustic. Since you have the TV so high anyway, would you be able to move the TV to the left side of the fireplace? Then you that wall would be a focal point if you floated the sofa to face the fireplace and the relocated TV. Place your chair in one of the fireplace corners.

As for art, look for art works in grays and an accent color you from your upholstered chair--pale turquoise

I would paint out the fireplace brick... it's too dark and heavy. I think it would really brighten up the room and make it cosier

Also - 2 accent pillows on the couch will make a big difference. The pillows that match don't do much for the space.

Search out painted fireplaces on Houzz to get some ideas. A new fireplace wall will lift your space from dated to trendy!
Your chair has pretty colors. Find sofa pillows in some of those colors. Make space for a new gourd shaped lamp in one of those colors too.

Agree on painting the brick- stick to farmhouse colors (light). I think once the brick is lighter, the wood mantle will pop and look amazing. The picture on the mantle looks dated and not the right size for that space. Take off the greenery there too and simplify. I think the lamps and coffee table will come to life more as well once the brick is painted. Consider a throw pillow or blanket with a pop of color.

One thing to consider is the fireplace area..the size makes it a big dark presence in the room...in order to lighten it up and accentuate the drama ......try the clutter and go with only a few large impactful pieces of art or sculpture....or a big striking mirror...choose light colors or finishes that will contrast with the dark matte finish of the fireplace...move the plants on the mantle against the lighter color walls for the same reason...

The tv location is unclear from the,pics but looks too high and should be centered on the wall....if you still have the manuals for the tv...they will tell you the optimum distances and heights for viewing....also the lamp located right in front of the railing is awkward ..try one lamp at each end of the couch for balance...and function...more comprehensive pics showing whole walls are needed as the underlying challenge seems to be balance and scale ..the two chairs need to be placed properly so a picture of that whole end of the room is needed...
