Is this the ginger that we eat ginger root of? If so, it is my first time seeing ginger seeds and flowers, WOW!

If it is not, it is a close relative. I could sense the characteristic ginger smell when I was getting the seeds from the pods.

I've planted roots and had green leaves come out once, but died.

Kay Young, a gentleman gardener once told me that he has success with sprouting the culinary ginger roots in perlite, in a perforated plastic baggie. He said that he soaked the perlite in water then tossed it in with the ginger roots in early spring and placed it on his table near a window until he saw growing tips. He then planted them out in pots so that they could be protected in winter. I got some of the sprouted roots and have been keeping them going for a couple of years.

They have not yet bloomed. I tend to keep ginger in shadier area to prevent leaf burn from the sun and to keep the foliage looking fresher, so no blooms.
