I think I've found my backsplash- feedback please.

I really want to get my backsplash done and I think I may have found the one. It's a gray dual glaze subway by Heath Ceranics, pictured below in 2X4 which is stocked. I would order a larger size, 3X6 or even 6X12 and I would use the same black grout as shown on the tile board. It's definitely warmer looking in my kitchen than it seemed in the showroom. Would love some feedback on if this will look great or if I'm way off base.

dual glaze and dark grout is going to pull the eye IN, IN, IN,..... Not sure you should....it's not an issue of like/dislike.....it's whether kitchen backsplash is the correct place for it. I might consider it over by the mixer on the side.....does it have a corresponding solid tile for perimeter elsewhere? But that probably won't satisfy you for what you have in mind....a little something stand-out-ish. This pick I feel is not right....

Herb, you think if I go with a larger tile it would still be too much? I need something interesting to satisfy DH and I do think the Heath tiles are beautiful. It is also the least "out there" tile he has liked. You wouldn't believe some of the wild colors and patterns he's suggested!

get sample boards propped up and stand back..... walk in/around space.

I have seen those Heath tiles in person. They are pretty cool. I think I would like them better with more subtle grout.

There's something really strangely unappealing about those to my eye. I really like slight variation in tiles, but maybe it's the contrast between the white and the taupey shades is what is off-putting. If the largest area of your backsplash is behind the range, I'd probably go for a color or interesting shaped tile like your husband is choosing.

it looks different in the two photos because there is a different cast to the light. there are strong pink overtones on everything in the first photo and green cast over everything in the second photo. I personally don't like the heath for that space.. but if you like it that's what's important. I don't think it would ruin your kitchen or anything (really pretty btw) what are some of the other things your husband has liked?

    Do they have something like a 4 x 8 or 3 x 9? I think 6 x 12 would be too large.

I happen to like them a lot, and think they would add interest. It's more interesting than plain tile but still subtle enough and it's fun. I probably would use a lighter grout though. Probably pick up the gray from the tile.

Looking at the site, I'm not sure they have the size you mentioned or the two I mentioned. It seems they have 2x4, 2x6, 3x6, 2x12, 3x12

I agree with benjesbride. Not a fan at all. The contrast is too stark and random.

Because anything "will go" with black and white. I would do sample boards. That said, to me, the tiles seem minimalist modern and you have a white shaker kitchen not minimalist.

I also don't see that aesthetic blending with what you've got so far.

It reminds me of a DNA map, but use whatever you like.

I think you could do it, but I'm not sure about the color of the tile with your existing kitchen colors. I think you'll need to look at it in your space under a variety of lighting conditions (including your LED bulbs). What type of bulbs are in the hood? You might want to replace them if they are turning everything pink.

If you did it I think I would replace some more of the accessories (such as the wall clock) with a more contemporary style. You've already brought in contemporary chairs at the dining area and maybe the light fixtures over the island (I can't see the details on them). Personally I think an eclectic style makes the house more personalized because most people like elements out of many styles -- but understand perfectly that sometimes people want the more unified single style look that feels calm and soothing.

I'd say they're going for a look of mixing contemporary, traditional and mod (60's 70's) the lights are mod. the clock is mod. but the cabinets, sink and hood are traditional. and the island is super modern contemporary. for balance I think something else in this room needs to be ultra contemporary to balance the island. maybe the faucet (some sort of streamlined futuristic looking thing) or the door pulls? that might make the heath backsplash more balanced? does the heath come in other colors? I'd call the heath backsplash more on the mod side as well. it's kind of a mix of mod and ultra contemporary. but the colors don't pull into the island (at least on my monitor)

I agree with Benjesbride, Dan1888 and Sm5525. For me, it's the a-symmetry that gives me the heebie-jeebies. It makes my eye be constantly darting left-right-left-right.

A tile backsplash is not like a faucet or a light fixture you can just switch out in a couple of years. This backsplash will be with you for a while. Also, unlike a faucet or light fixture which is in one spot, this backsplash will be covering a lot of area. Make sure you are certain you will enjoy seeing it every time you come in the kitchen.

Barncatz said it's irrelevant whether we like it. I respectfully disagree. The OP specifically asked in her post for feedback whether we think it would look great or not.

I don't like them at all. They look like seconds. Like something went weirdly wrong.

Miranda33, I was just clumsily trying to encourage the OP to get the tile if she loves it, despite some of us who don't think it's the best match. I did not mean to imply we shouldn't provide feedback, and I did as well. Merry Christmas Eve everybody!

I think there are two meanings of "tell me if you like it or not" people aren't really wondering if faceless strangers on the internet love their choices or not (mostly) what they are really asking is will this costly decision ruin my house. So we can give our personal tastes as a reference but at the end of the day they don't matter that much to someone else choosing their decor. I don't love this tile but I'm guessing they probably won't love my tile either. ;) people have different tastes. Do I think it would ruin their kitchen.. Probably not.

It won't ruin her kitchen. And in the end it is all personal opinion and you know what they say about those.

I tried sampling some of the backsplash in to the room. If I had a square picture of the wall I think I could have done better but this is what I got lol. (i'm not very good at this sort of thing)

actually looking at some of the other colors I think a gunmetal or jade or maybe even basalt... might look striking. something about having various shades of white or cream next to each other that is a little jarring though.

i vote no., agree with other dissenters., and their various reasons..

    keep looking!

Alisa, love the first two you posted above! If u want color, go for it!

I think I would like different colors of tile mixed rather than different color mixed on one tile. I think several people here have variations of that.

melis918- did you end up moving forward with this backsplash?

    last modified: 8 years ago

Melis918 I'm just seeing your kitchen for the first time and I know I'm a little late to respond but wanted to say not that I don't like the backsplash you chose but rather that I think it would work better for a different application. Your kitchen is too pretty for that tile. If you are still looking consider an arabesque. Would look really pretty in your kitchen. I like the dark grey grout with it as it would pick up your dark counters and pop out, but if you want to be conservative the all white is pretty too! And for more color you could use marble arabesque to pick up your marble counter. I love to repeat elements :)

MaWizz: Thank you for the arabesque suggestion. You are definitely not too late since I am still very much ABB. I started this thread right before Christmas, and then with the holidays and travel and a zillion things since, I have not given much thought to my backsplash. By reviving this thread you forced me to start really thinking about it again. I agree with most that responded that the Heath dual glaze is all wrong and I have abandoned that idea for good. I also am sure I do not want a white or marble subway. I still think something in a pretty light gray would be good, but am open to other colors. I spent a long time on the Pratt and Larson website today and plan to visit a showroom that sells their tiles next week. I love my new kitchen but it feels incomplete without a bs.

It's hard to remember what you've ruled out. My recollection is that Fireclay Tile wasn't right for you. Did you consider the well-traveled Encore Silver crackle tile? It would also be helpful to know the paint color.

Pratt and Larson had a Bas Relief tile collection that I thought was gorgeous. Thanks for the update!
