I love mine! I had a gas line installed for this new house but in the end, I chose the induction. I have never had a gas range, so I can't compare, but it beats the heck out of my old electric range.

Boils water in 90 seconds (literally), and is incredibly responsive. It makes me happy.

Thanks for comments. I have been researching online and most negative comment is scratching from rough bottom cookware. I don't have to make a decision for about 4 months and I'm wondering if I should try one of the portable table units just to get a feel for it. If the magnet test if reliable, I have several pots and pans that should work.

If you can get one, try it! You will fall in love with it for sure. Good luck!

@sdjbriggs, the one thing I KNOW that will go in our new kitchen is induction. Getting a portable unit might be helpful. I wouldn't let it sway your decision though. Just use it mostly to get a feel for how it works.

A couple things I've noticed - the portable does make a bit more of the buzzing sound that you sometimes hear people complain about. I didn't notice it at ALL on the full size unit. The portable is also a lower wattage than the full size unit so it's going to be a bit less powerful than a full size range. It still does an amazing job though.

My DH ONLY wanted gas. Most of my life I've had electric and it's what I'm most comfortable with. He is now sold on induction. It's the best of both worlds for both of us.

My only warning is that if you DO get a portable unit, try to get one locally. I understand that the small ones can be a bit finicky sometimes and it's best to get it somewhere that you can return it easily.

BTW, if you have cast iron, you can use that as well. Just be careful in moving the pan around on the glass.

While we're waiting for our kitchen reno to finish, we did the same thing as Onthefence above. We bought the Max Burton portable induction single burner (highest rated portable model in Cooks Illustrated). I was impressed, and that's with the 1800 watt, 110 volt model.
