How to best maximize this space?

This room is technically a fourth bedroom. It has an antique pocket door with a half lite. The room is currently black but I am open to painting. My husband is a carpenter and we are considering built ins on the back wall which is why that window hasn't been trimmed yet. I have shared photos of the actual space and a few spaces I like. There are several needs we have and only one space. How would you lay it out?

-craft/ art space to share with children

It may be helpful if you consider, and share, what the rest of your home is like. Meaning what other spaces are there for your children, or you two? Do you need a separate playroom for kids, or a retreat for you to use for your own relaxation or creative time?
Having just witnessed how children can overtake a space in the home of adults (Christmas day with friends) I would suggest that the parents must have a way to keep toys and such corralled, plus have a place for reading or drawing for kids. Also parents need a place for themselves for down time or their own hobbies.

Our home is a 2 Story and the kids typically go upstairs to play in the bedrooms. Our master bedroom is a nice relaxing space for us, this is where I go to read & have quiet time, if not the living room. I am happy to share the office space with the kids so long as their items are tucked out of sight when not in use.

Your home is lovely. It seems that having your office with some closed cabinetry and shelves would be a start. ( after painting the room of course).

Yes paint that dark abyss of a room the same fresh color as your main spaces (or white like your trim and inspiration shot). Lots of closed cabinets below a countertop and some open shelves above counter top will work well. Countertop could be butcher block like your inspiration shot....and I'd replace the ceiling fan with a nice semi flush mount fixture. Good luck!

We have a similar space. Because we all use laptops and can tuck them away, We put a farm style table in the center with wishbone chairs. And put built ins along the walls to store books and art supplies. We put recessed lighting and a beautiful light fixture. Persian rug on the floor.
