Crosses with Exotic Star

Hi Folks,

Has anyone tried different crosses with this beauty lately? If so, which ones and how successful were you? I have been perusing the archives but I don't see anything recent.

Thanks,

Fred

    Hi Fred,

I had a successful blooming of papilio x Exotic Star; my PapExStacy!! I know I've got others around here too using Exotic Star that may or may not have bloomed yet. Now that I think about it though, I don't think I have much of anything with Exotic Star being the seed parent, so maybe the way to go would be using her pollen on others. Oh, and I also have nelsonii x Exotic Star as well as x papilio growing well too. I think the cross would have taken either way, but who knows?

I'm sure there will be others who might have been successful bringing Exotic Star to seed. Oh, and I also have Evergreen x Exotic Star. I also had a huge no-id orange x Exotic Star which when it bloomed, was basically orange. I had to use my imagination to convince myself that I saw some traces of Exotic Star☺☺

How many flowers have to got to experiment with?

Fred, I just went through my pictures and found some pictures from Beatrice labeled Exotic Star x yungasence and then there was my gorgeous #0016 x Exotic Star, remember that one??

I forgot to add that I found a picture of a seedpod of Exotic Star x Peach Parfait, never to be seen again, they must have been all bad...

I'm crossing my fingers, toes and eyes that my attempts to pollinate ES with Santos pollen and I have a total of eight flowers to play with. Way too early to tell, but I will let you all know it it takes. I have my ES at work and I'm going to try Little Devil & Rapido pollen as soon as the stigmas open up a bit and hopefully one of them will also take. I definitely remember #0016 x Exotic Star and it was drool worthy :-)))))))

I join you crossing my fingers for the pollination with Santos! And Pavel showed us a very beautiful Exotic Star x Christmas Gift last year, if I remember it correctly. So it is possible to have ES as seed parent.

    Good luck!

Fred, do I remember you having a blooming of one of the Komoriya reticulatum hybrids several month back or was it someone else?? One of the Autumn Rose or Pink Ladies might be worth a try if it was you, another shot at striped leaves! If it was you I just know you saved the pollen....☺☺

Also I have my yellowish calyptratum, Thai Thai and Evergreen fresh from this year if you want a dab or two of any of them....☺☺

    Hi Donna,

I have Autumn Pink Lady but like a ding dong I didn't collect her pollen :-(((( I have Evergreen pollen but it was from last year. If you have fresh EG and calyptratum,I would love to try and most definitely any seeds :-)))) Thank you for the offer :-))))

Ok, I'll get them out tomorrow, should get to you by the weekend. No Thai Thai??!! That would be the first thing I would try....In fact, I have two established Exotic Stars that will bloom soon and I will try all three of these pollens on mine plus some old Santos....

You didn't save Autumn Pink Lady...hmmmmm

Wow!! Those look wonderful!!! I guess I labeled your pictures incorrectly, I had put Exotic Star first as the seed parent. She definitely has strong pollen!! I can't wait to see these bloom, I still have some from 5 years ago from this cross that haven't bloomed, you most definitely have the magic touch!!☺☺

I just noticed that striped leaf on the bottom picture on the right??

    Oooooh Beatrice,

Are you kidding???? Yungacence X Exotic Star is absolutely stunning!!!!!

    Fred

    Very nice flowers and plants.

Exotic Star is quite picky in terms of pollination parent. My bulb Very good take pollen from Papilio Yungacense, Santiago. There was also a lot of seeds and germination percentage excellent. I did more crosses, but when mature seedpods, seeds were marked by a white spot - bad seeds. Among them, however, you can sometimes find a good 2-3 seeds and they grow! This is it how I was grown my cross E.Star x Christmas Gift - only two seeds from the seedpod were good. So there is always hope. More should work cybisters... more as flowered big hybrids, but you never know. I once had success crossing the Tres Chic !!! - Only one seed good - but seedling died after 1 year - my big fault. I was very unhappy. I was never successful in this cross again.

Fred, good luck with your pollination and believe that you will successful.

Donna , yungacense is the seed parent , yes , it is always a very good seed producer with big pods and large seeds. I really hope I will see some of your seeds blooming this winter , 1 or 2 of them , I would be so happy .

There is no striped leave , no ! maybe you see the label stem

Thank you Fred , in 2016 I reached the reverse cross , but this is my only cross with ES as seed parent , they fail most of time .

Is that the shadow of a scape on the left? Looks like my huge ES bulb may have 4 scapes coming. 3 for sure and I think another one is NOT a leaf.

oh ! sure it looks like , but I don't think , I have to go and see. Never got so many scapes with ES !!! even if my bulbs are huge , never. will you post a picture ?

Looks like 3 scapes for sure.

That is wonderful!!! I love the happy Santa Troll :-))))) My Exotic Star also had three scapes and a total of eight flowes!!!!!

Wow!! That will be a sight to behold when it blooms, I'm assuming this is an older established bulb? My two from other years, have been growing leaves all winter and so no bloom yet.

    Yet another cute little doodad!!

Will you put some Thai Thai on a couple, I'm going to try that.

Thank you Kristy , beautifull .

I never get 4 scapes with ES , last year , I had 3 scapes on my old big bulb , the first one with 2 flowers , the second one with 3 , and the last one with 4 flowers ☺

But thew grew one after one , not at the same time like yours , you will have a wonderfull bouquet !

I trying some years (3 exactly) with Exotic Star like seed parent without good success. I try with different diploids varieties and species and nothing... This last spring I had good luck... My Exotic Star give me a bud with 3 flowers for first time and all them was pollinated.

2 flowers with a japanese Cybister hybrid, the other one x self.

Not so many seeds but all them are now little seedlings growth very slow... I still waiting for exotic star flowering and repeat the same cross.

    Hi Folks,

It looks like I may have been successful with Exotic Star x Santos and I got quite a few seeds from the first two pods.

Before cleaning (sorry for the sideways shot)

    After cleaning.

I have much more than I can use and if anyone would like some, please message me. I have another two pods coming and they look pretty plump so I'll probably have twice as many seeds very shortly.

Oooof I know and I'm not looking forward to it. It took me over a @#&*%!? hour to get from Cambridge to Watertown this morning...I wasn't very happy this morning to come to work. If the weather is as bad as they say it will be, I really hope they close the bank so I can stay home and shovel that $%*! tomorrow...OY!!!!!
