It would not survive...not enough light reaches there...I wish.

fake fake fake...sorry. I travel a lot. All my plants fake. If you buy them at the right place you can get some that look real. A tall single open shelf with dishes or books on it could be cool. If you are by the dining room, you could put some cool dishes or bowls on it.

So something tall rather than another chest of drawers with a picture on top?

Maybe something like a stool or small table with a plant on top. Here are some ideas.

I would center the 3 seater on your long wall & move the one lounge chair to the other side on the wall adjacent to the chest & the sidelights next to the door.

Would you take a photo of the offending empty space in this arrangement, please? Take it from the opposite end of the room so we can see all the furniture.

Have never disagreed with Grover before but I actually like the furniture with more space between because it looks large and crowded.
Will you be returning you rug to the space?

Yes, loveseat in front of window is better. It makes better use of the space.

The antique cabinet at the other end actually turns into a little secretay desk. Do you think the room needs something tall or around the same height as that other cabinet/desk.

The mirror on other side is so large that I just threw them up high...will probably end up moving them. Thank you.

A live plant does help your household atmosphere a lot. I have grown a sanseveria (also known as "mother-in-law's tongue) very successfully in dim places. I think you could almost grow one in a closet. They start out smallish but grow pretty fast. I started with one that was about a foot tall. Five years later I had to give it away on Craigslist because it was taller than my husband. All I had to do to it was water it occasionally and repot it when necessary. The roots are very strong. Martha Stewart inherited some at her house in Maine and they had busted open large concrete planters!

When @FLADeziner had you put the sofa centered.....you didn't move the side table a little closer to the sofa that's why it look it has so much space also I would have left the arm chair where you last positioned it originally. Do you have a matching side table to put at the other end? You could use your rolling bar in the dining room if you you have any room for it.

I love this French iron secretary from Restoration Hardware. With all the pattern in the sofas, I'd go with a plain rug.

Another option: push this whole arrangement toward the other end of the room until the loveseat lines up with the opening opposite the couch and the tan tufted chair is on the other side of the opening. Then your empty space is by the window and you might use a console there with plants.

Yes, I like the idea of a nice piece with a bit of history there, and I will keep my eye out for a rug with no pattern in the cream or bit darker family. Thank you.

I would hate to be too far from the window- that is my favorite part of the room. Otherwise, yes that would be an interesting twist to leave that area more empty.

Have you tried the Secretary where groveraxle placed the black desk unit? I think I would help balance the weighty furniture. The high backs on the chairs and everything overstuffed, is really too much for this room. I think I would find another home for one of the high-backed chairs. A nice plant on an Asian plant Stand in a fish pot would go in that corner to put some height on that side of the room. Once the furniture is arranged then you can figure out wall hangings. Yes, on the love seat in front of the windows. Longer sofa on the long wall, best arrangement. I think with the Secretary desk moved between the living room (in the living room) and dining room might provide some needed separation as well as make it more "usable" spot.

Rug in solid color very important to a more "open" feeling in the room.

Either one then, and leave the one with the back to the dining room, especially if you put the dark secretary desk there. That is a beautiful piece by the way, and it deserves a more "special place" than tucked into that corner.

Would the one under the picture be the one to move? Or does the one in the center of the room interfer too much?

I think the chair near the love seat makes for too much furniture look. By putting the one with it's back to the dining room you create a better more defined conversation "U". Then with the Secretary on that long wall, it has its own little defined space. I think you could even put the mirror above it there as well and balance that off with art over the long sofa on the long wall. However, that art needs to be about 2/3 the length of the sofa so it makes that space. It doesn't have to be all painting. It could be painting and two sconces one on either side, just so the "net" space is roughly 2/3 of the area above the sofa.

I found these two antique cabinets for that corner. They are more affordable options for me. Any idea which would be best for that corner or are they both a no?
