2017 January Block Lotto

Sorry for the delay in getting this post up!

This lotto is open to all and new quilters are encouraged to participate. You will learn much and have fun doing it. Participate in as many, or as few, lottos as you want, but even if you don't like the current month's block think about doing at least one. The winner will appreciate your efforts!

Here's the drill:
- each month there will be a designated block, you can send 1, 2 or 3 blocks

- Please make the blocks 12.5inches x 12.5inches with no more than 1/4" variation. With your blocks include name, mailing address, forum name and $1 per lotto month (not per block) to cover postage for the winning blocks.

- if possible, either attach your name to the back of each block or write your name in the seam allowance with a fabric pen so the winner knows who made the block (this is not a requirement, just a request)

- all blocks received by the last day of the month will be included in the lotto drawing

- you will have 1, 2 or 3 chances to win, depending on how many blocks you've sent in.

Blocks are to be mailed to Linda. She will arrange the collection and dispersal to the winner. If you need her mailing address, you may request it by sending her a message at linda at schultz-assoc .com

- Where it says 'white,' that means solid white, white-on-white, or even a white with a very little bit of color print as long as it reads as white.

Crrand1, your blocks are perfect. The quilt would be really boring if the blocks were too similar. Glad you joined in.

And, here they come. The pile is growing. Thanks Val and Lois. I already have Sue's and Theresa's. This is going to be a lovely quilt.

And mine. I like the secondary block effect you can get.

So I am just starting quilting, bear with me. I wanted to make sure I wasn't completely horrible before starting the other two squares I would like to do. Is this acceptable or should I start over?

trying to get it all to line up was tricky :(

    eterprincess -

It looks like you could use a couple of tips before you try a couple more. After you sew seach piece, I recommend you press them so they are really flat at each seam. Couple of questions for you - are you making 1/4" seams? You lost your points in a couple places and that could be the result of not sewing 1/4" seams. It also looks like you may have cut the blue pieces the lower left and upper right blocks in your picture too small. When you are finished and press the block, it should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" so that when the blocks are all sewn together, the "finished" size of each block is 12". If you have any other questions, you can email me at:

I did quarter inch seams but then that made the larger blocks too big because they didn't have the half inch taken in with the seams and wasn't sure how to match them. Also wasnt sure if there was supposed to be a quarter inche left on the outside to join the blocks together. I will email you because it was all so confusion and could figure it how people had it so perfect to the corner then was wondering if that would be a problem when joining then

    Welcome to the lotto, eterprincess!

Another tip is to measure your work as you go. For example, after you make the four patches in this block they should each measure 6.5" square. If not, correct them before moving on to the next step. It is a bit tedious at first, but measuring as you go really helps.

Another tip is watching tutorials on the web. There are several you tube videos showing different methods for making and squaring up HST's (half square triangles). When I first started I would make my HST's a bit bigger and then trim down, but find a method that works best for you.

Love your fabric choices ,,, very pretty!

I have Beth's' and will anxiously wait to see Vasu's, Linda's and Carol's. This will be a great quilt.

Toolgranny - My blocks are also in the mail. You should receive them Mon or Tue. Are you still good with the $1 per lotto month given the increase in postal rates this week? That's what I sent for the entire year, but if more is needed (so you aren't shorted), just let me know and I'll send more. Also, I know the lotto is limited to 3 blocks per month, but for one month I sent in 4 blocks. So whoever wins that month will get a bonus block. Thanks!

I'm still good with just $1. Beth in Florida keeps sending too much so she's covering any shortages. Between Beth and I, we'll manage. But, thanks for asking!

    Linda,

I mailed the blocks just today (last week was crazy). Please don't include me in the drawing but I hope it reaches in time to mail them to the winner.
