Countertop/backsplash material dilemma

Hi, I am having problems choosing a countertop/backsplash material. I can't go dark since there is not a lot of natural light in the room. I don't wish to use tiles for the backsplash - ideally same material for both countertop and backsplash.

Kitchen is exactly as shown in pic, terracotta tiles were used for the flooring. Any suggestions regards material and colour? Thanks!

Not sure about the reason for terra cotta floors with this kitchen but before you added those I would have said just a marble counter and backsplash but with those floors IMO marble is the wrong way to go , so maybe soapstone in as light a green as possible this is a very traditional/ formal kitchen with a very casual floor so hard to figure out the best for counters and if the space is dark you need to add some lighting IMO not sure what that ceiling is whether it is some sort of lighting but if not i see none to mention

Thank-you both for your feedback. I didnt actually choose the terracotta tiles since they were already there when I bought the house. I didnt consider replacing them since they go very well with the mediterranean style of the house (there are also huge stone arches in the kitchen/dining area). The pics above show kitchens that are similar in colour and style, and the floor is also similar to the one I have. Will try to post a pic of mine asap, they actually look good together. It's the backsplash/countertop choice Im still not sure about...like, should I go with the same cream colour of the cabinets or should I create a contrast? Didnt wish to use tiles for backsplash, I personally prefer either marble/quartz/quartzite. I personally dont have a great fancy for granite, and also think it is too busy to be used as a backsplash.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I also couldnt understand why marble cant go with terracotta floors..?
I've seen it a lot in Tuscan/Spanish/Mediterranean style houses... but
maybe I misunderstood

@Michelle Yorke Int.Design - The kitchen you have designed is really gorgeous :) But would you use a more creamy coloured backsplash with my cabinets or just go white as in your pics?
