What's on the other wall? Can you build a closet there instead? Will you be refinishing the floors where the old closet was removed?

The other wall was where I originally thought about building the new closet but thought about wardrobe instead. Yes I will redo the floor.

I'd put in a new closet on the other wall, perhaps with built in drawers to act as a chest of drawers. If you are removing the panelling, that's a good time to do it, along with the floor refinishing you plan.

Here's a photo with three banks of drawers. Your new closet might have room for one bank, with a double rod in the rest of the space.

Even with the newly freed up space, a big sleigh bed may be hard to walk around. You might keep the idea of a new platform bed with storage underneath in mind as a back up plan in case the sleigh bed doesn't work.

Yeah, especially if it has a footboard, a sleigh bed tends to be bad in smaller rooms -- you'll just feel shoehorned in. Better to have some breathing space...

Thanks! I like the suggestions. I am not in agreement with my husband on bringing the sleigh bed, it also has 25" night stands, 2 larger dressers. We are downsizing and I want a bed that I can have draws underneath or at least storage boxes. We will have to have some dressers in the spare room.

If we do a double bed we could have a dresser were I wanted a wardrobe and renovate the closet because it is horrible (circa 1958).

Yes acm the bed is 66" x 89" it is huge. We have a large bedroom now so plenty of room.

If you remove the closet keep in mind it cannot be counted as an actual bedroom anymore for resale. I wouldn't remove it, but if you don't mind losing value in the event you may need to sell your house that is up to you.

The sleigh bed is not a good idea. They stick out too far from the wall at the head of the bed and if it has a footboard it takes up even more space. I would look for a bed frame with a straighter low-profile headboard and no footboard (or a low, straight footboard).

Yes I thought about that if I remove the closet and to make matters worse the other room that has a closet is the utility room. I want to remove that to expand the bathroom. Would a built in count as a closet?

Yes the sleigh bed should not come with us. Maybe when we vacation there in May my husband will see that.

I can't imagine a queen sleigh bed in this room with or without a closet! Just won't work. A sleigh bed takes up about 6" on each end for the head and foot boards. That is 1'. The width is bigger too because of the heavy side rails. You will spend a ton of money, and have an even more cramped space than you have now. Wouldn't recommend that at all. Tell your hubby to "call me"! lol

I even have a diagram of the room with and without the closet and yes you are right it won'the fit. He is at the point I can't even mention it. He has not been there yet and the realtor photo's make things look bigger than they are.

I have to convince him double bed with underbed drawers, remodel the closet. He will see this when we are there in May.

Might be a good idea to take along some painters tape with you when you go on your vacation. Tape out the bed's and nightstands' measurements to see if you can live with that small amount of available space.

Good idea, I have my notebook with the dimensions of the set and would have a tape measure but the painters tape is great. Thanks!

so, for clarity (mine) this will be a vacation home?

sometimes its just as easy to go along with someone who really wants something, especially as then they are more likely to go along with you when you really want something. you dont need a lot of storage space in a vacation home, no out of season clothing, etc..... go with the flow, move the sleigh bed, soon enough down the road to unmove it if it doesnt work out. not worth endless brangling.

No it's actually going to be our permanent home by fall. Just going in May to take care of things. It was someone's summer rental and we are downsizing and moving East to the beach.

ah ok. well. all i can say is choose your battles. consider storage units other places. consider why your husband is attached to this bed. consider so very many things. being at the beach will be its own reward.

Seriously hoping when he actually sees the place in person he will understand. Either that or he might say sell the place!

People tend to tire of true yellows quite quickly. Your sister has good sense! haha! I have two sisters who are both wonderful in their own ways!

No you are right she does have good sense. She feels like the open porch is part of the great room and I wanted it treated as a separate area. Also told me the room is so bright with all the windows that I do not need paint color that bright. I bet you agree with her. I wanted her to tell me what color she would paint it but she never answered. She's East coast I'm West coast. She found the house and tends to think of it as her house.

so really you can blame her when the bed doesnt fit!

I would purchase a different bed before removing the closet. Sleigh beds take up a lot of space.
