You shouldnt have any problems, I think the same sex have issues getting along. Introduce them gradually and all will be fine.

I think it very much depends on the animals in question. I house sit my upstairs neighbor's female kitty when she is out of town (3 weeks each month) and for ease, she just moves in with us. It took the entire first session for her to get used to my boys (a neutered tom and cat-adoring dog) but now they get along famously!! The two cats play and chase each other, are constant companions when out of doors and eat side by side. She is not as wild about the dog as he is her, but she is on the shy side and he is a very much in-your-face kinda dog, especially with cats!! He and his cat brother play and wrestle together constantly, groom each other and cuddle up on the couch together. She just finds a quiet, private place to nap and disappears :-))

i don't really know how it is with cats (i suspect the same) but with dogs, it's always been said that opposite genders get along the best. having said that, i have 3 female great danes that are the best of friends.

We have 3 male and 1 female cat and for the most part they get along. There are some non-serious scuffles but I don't think they are gender related. It is more about being top cat.

I've always had fixed male and female cats. You may well have drama in introducing a new cat but it most likely won't be because of gender. I'd say go for it!

I agree with others, it's pretty much based on the individual pets not necessarily their gender. I have a male (fixed) dog and a female (fixed) dog that are best of friends. I have 3 cats, all fixed, 2 males and a female, and they are all best buddies too. She is a beaut ... keep looking, plenty of cats out there need a good home!

My vet says male-female are the most likely to get along, and two females the most likely to NOT... but who knows! It does also depend on personality as ev else has said.

I would just emphasize following very strict introduction protocols which will greatly increase your chances of success... no matter what sex they are.

Keep the cats separate but let them sniff/hear each other thru the door. You want them to both be relaxed and not showing any signs of anxiety before moving to the next step, which would be to let them see and sniff ea other for brief but increasing periods of time.

If you can put up a screen door temporarily - thats even better as an in-between step. No anxiety = no growling or hissing, no swishing tails, or scared-sounding meows,, or fur standing up on end.

Basically.... its better to err on the side of caution than risk getting them off to a bad start which .... worst case scenario... you might have to start all over again with keeping them separate for even longer. Ask me how I know that!

Oh one other thing - before she's brought home, and while they're kept in separate rooms -rub each cat with a towel and then switch towels so they have ea. other's scent. Also FELIWAY regular formula plug in- this product works by mimicking a happy cat pherome,

We have done everything that Current Resident suggests, and these suggestions are listed on many sites as the proper way to introduce animals. None of this has worked, and neither has the Feliway, so we are now trying Prozac. Ours are two 8-year-old males and most articles will state that sometimes certain cats will not get along no matter what. We're trying to be patient, but it can be a stressful process.

I don't believe it has anything to do with gender. I know with dogs, I've always heard that a male with a female will get along better than two of the same sex. But I think just like we're all individuals with our own personalities, so are our kitties and pooches. Some will get along others won't. Most will learn to live with each other.

I have two male bulldogs close to the same age. They don't love each other, but they do get along just fine. Once in a while they'll have a skirmish. We learned it generally works out in a few seconds on it's own, without our intervention.
