If I am actually seeing the ceiling line in this picture the problem is that you don't have enough space between the top of the mantle and the ceiling. I see this a lot and it pisses me off that builders put in the mantles that are so over sized. If that is indeed the ceiling line, You need to shop for one impressive piece of art that will almost entirely fill the space. The first picture shows how you can get a different look by filling all the space. I'm afraid the next opne is small but hopefully you can see that I was able to find an oval mirror to hand horizontally for that space.

A mirror is always a nice addition above a fireplace, creating an illusion of space.

The bigger problem are the empty spaces on either side. Tall narrow plants on each side would fill the space. You would bring life into the room and hide those outlets.

Crown molding on ceiling above and light to or from ceiling. I like some of the new track lights, such as the ones with a leaf motif. A mirror might also pick up light from another part of the room.

try treating the 3 objects as one.....reverse the candlesticks, smaller on outside and move a tad closer towards center.....find a third object to replace too small bowl and move it a tad towards center....good luck

Love having a fire place but I absolutely agree with Gantts and FD Hodge. You don't really have much height to play with so your balance will come when you go long and wide with your art or a mirror. I like having a couple of chairs on either side of a fire place. If there is room, it would certainly make for one of the coziest spots in the house. As far as electrical sockets are concerned... well, if they are really something that stands out to you, chairs would certainly cover them.
