Kitchen cabinets - paint chipping

We just had new kitchen cabinets installed. The paint is chipping in a couple places. It looks like it was due to an old blade being used to make cuts. Is this something the design company should fix? They have suggested it might be hard to meet our "high standards". I feel it is sloppy work and a lot of our friends have noticed the chipping. Please let me know what you think. Thanks

Sorry but I can't tell what parts of the cabinets you are taking photos of? Are the cabinets MDF or plywood?

That is unacceptable in new cabinets.

Hi Stan, the first is a piece on the island that connects to one of the legs. The second is on the right side of the garbage pull out. The cabinets are plywood.

It looks bad but I too can't tell where it is. And is that caulk on the first picture? Is that a laminate facing? It looks like laminate faced that was cut with the wrong saw blade.

If you have not completed your payments for them, don't until they are fixed. This is unacceptable. This is not "your high standards" it's them trying to make you feel guilty so that you won't ask them to redo the work. Ask them to fix the problem and explain to you how it will be fixed and when it will be fixed. Adjust the payment schedule accordingly

I would ask for the owner. This is a decision outside the ordinary scope of responsibility of whoever made that thoughtless statement. Hold payment.

Dan1888, the comment came from the owner. Other comments similar to that have been made too. I am meeting with them tomorrow and just wanted reassurance I wasn't being too picky. I will post some more pictures showing other issues. I appreciate all of the feedback.

Laminate isn't the easiest product to work with, it's brittle and chips easily. Your installers should have been informed ahead of time that they weren't dealing with paint. They needed a different blade. They should have stopped and gone and gotten that blade.

But that is water under the bridge now. You should have mentioned the issue way before now. During the install. This has been done for weeks. It's all assembled and supporting granite. You should never have called the granite guys for the template. It's too late after it's all been put together.

Order some wide scribe molding for against the walls. And don't look under the granite overhang. No one does that anyway unless they are 3' tall.

Hi Sophie, thanks for the response. The cabinets are wood, it is the paint that is chipping. The design company we used sold us and installed the cabinets, countertops and backsplash. We brought up all of the issues as soon as we saw them. We were constantly told not too worry about things as the final cabinet adjustments and their touch up guy would fix everything. Unfortunately that is not what happened. I will post other issues we are facing. We are meeting with them tomorrow, I appreciate all of the feedback.

Please name the brand, door style, and finish color of the cabinets. Because that coating does not appear to behave like paint. It appears to be the nextgen laminate wrap that has taken over the market from paint.

^That just needs a more skilled hand at touch up.

Attached is a picture of some of the touch up work, the touch up paint is different than the cabinet color.

Hi Sophie, the cabinets are Ultracraft, the style is Rockford, the door color is Artic White and the door material is Maple. Thanks for your feedback

Hmmm.... their paint coating seems awfully thick. Which increases brittleness. But... this is all 100% install related. No doubt.

Were the installers contracted through the design shop where you bought the cabinets? Or were they independent installers recommended by the design shop? Or where did you find these guys? How much did they charge? Are they paid in full? Trying to find out who has the leverage here.

We contracted the design company for the installation too. We have withheld about $4,000. We are meeting with the owner tomorrow who has been difficult to deal with. One of her last email comments was "I will say again I am sorry you are not happy with what we have done for you." She has been putting the blame on us with other comments like "this is acceptable to 99% of our clients." I think Practigal's comment above is spot on.

They need to up their standards and maybe change their install crew.

Awful. When you buy a product, it should be in "perfect" condition. That is not " high standards" that is what you paid for.

Those are not acceptable for "new" cabinets. I doubt that whoever you are dealing with would find those cabinets acceptable in THEIR new kitchen, but nothing surprises me anymore...

I would consider those cabinets as under standard if we had bought them used and reinstalled. One of those chipped edges might be accepted if not visible from the front. At that point, it should have been apparent that the blade was wrong and the install should have stopped until that problem had been handled. I would be embarrassed to be associated with someone who considers that to be acceptable standard of work.

It is not being too picky to expect a reasonable standard of work. Question: did you see an actual kitchen installation from this company? Even if it was in their showroom? Anytime someone shows you a picture or a project as a recommendation, the implication is that you should expect something of a comparable nature. Anything that won't be as shown to you should be clearly discussed as an upgrade.

I just had my rental cabinets replaced; I did not have any of those quality issues at all. Zero. Your high standards means you expect professional carpentry work! Not the sloppy work you've shown in these photos. Ask if a different carpenter installed the cabinets and trim work in the other 99% of their customer. And let the owner know you do not appreciate her dismissing your concerns over the quality of the work her company delivered and trying to deflect that on to you.

I wish there was a Houzz collection of close-up photos of various aspects of kitchen and bath workmanship. It needs some photos of fabulous work, then others with ordinary, acceptable level workmanship then photos of various "OMG, Someone charged for that?! " jobs. Perhaps some dissections of photos of high end craftsmanship results and lower end work would be educational. I'm seeing something like the fashion magazines that dress one model in all designer clothes with the final tally in the thousands and a second one in ordinary chain store/department store items at a fraction of the price.

I've seen lots of marketing brochures with cut away pictures and arrows showing the features of the company's premier product. Homeowners would probably benefit just as much from photos of installations as from pictures of the products. I know there are installation standards in the TCNA handbook, are there similar published standards for kitchen and bath cabinetry?

Totally unacceptable. So sorry this has happened to you. Do not back down, nor allow her to bully you. I would also contact Ultracraft directly. It makes their product look horrible. Certainly not good PR on a forum where many are making cabinet decisions.

Unfortunately the install crew can't get one of those $200 Forrest blades at HD. You have to know what you're doing ahead of time.

Wilson853 has a good suggestion. Contact the CS rep for Ultracraft and get their feedback and support.

I think contacting Ultracraft and including pictures and even a link to this discussion would get some pretty quick feedback from them.

If the company you used sold the cabinets and provided the installation crew they darn sure should have known what kind of equipment they needed for the installation and had it available. Why sell a product you do not know how to work with. Just all around a negative situation.

That toe kick is killing me holy cow it's not even close. A blind man could do better. And seriously what was their explanation for the chewed up drawer? I question if these were actually new cabinets or used sold as new. Heck who knows what brand they really are.

Seeing some of these messes makes me so happy with the folks that did my kitchen! I didn't have a single complaint even the seams are good. I lucked out, needed that after the flood lol.

I wish you the best of luck with this and definitely don't pay another dime till it satisfies you.

I've showed your photos to management and they agree with Sophie Wheeler that the issues appear to be installation related. We only sell through dealers, so you'll need to work with the installer and the dealer you purchased the cabinets from. I hope that you're able to get this fixed, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact our customer service team at 800-262-4046.

I'd like to help as much as I possibly can. If you will send me an email with the photos, a summary of the problems you're having, and your contact information, I'll get that to our Territory Manager in your area. You can reach me at social@ultracraft.com. Thank you!

UltraCraft - your company name is on this thread. You have been given an opportunity here to respond to a situation involving your product and one of your chosen dealers. This incident could show potential customers why they should buy your product instead of one from another of the multitude of cabinet companies in the marketplace. Why do you have a customer service team? Should it be called dealer services instead?

Although your company didn't directly create this problem, it is still your name being dragged through the mud. You are indirectly responsible as the source of the product and may wish to consider your company's image as you reply to dissatisfied customers. It's not the installing dealer's name stamped on the inside of the cabinets, it is yours.

Ultracraft is agreeing that installation sucks, which has to be helpful in convincing the installer that it is NOT acceptable. They've offered to help as much as they can through telephone and email. We have no idea what UC's followup will be and it wouldn't be very professional for them to tell us when they haven't even spoken with our OP and her installers yet!

It seems premature to be calling them out for bad service at this stage when they haven't had a chance to do more than introduce themselves. Hopefully we will soon have glowing reviews from Kwalsh. Good luck!

We had a productive meeting with our design company today. They indicated they are fully committed to addressing all of the open issues. They have scheduled their installers to come back next Thursday and Friday followed by their touch up guy. We are optimistic that everything will be taken care of and will post once it is. This is the first time I have used Houzz, what a great forum. We greatly appreciate everyone's feedback, it was extremely helpful, thank you!

I hope it is a different installer and touch up guy than previous. My husband I are DIYers and our work is 100% better than your pictures. Good Luck:)

How are their *installers* going to correct that hatchet job? How are they going to be any better the second time?

    last modified: 9 years ago

Please please do what the Ultracraft rep has asked you to do! They need to be able to follow through too. It is completely unacceptable work and I will bet their so called fix will be worse. It's obvious they don't know what they are doing! Save the next poor soul that goes to them!

In evaluating your pics it seems likely that some parts need to be replaced. The installers and touch-up aren't likely to have new material. This is where communication with the Ultracraft rep is really your next step. It'll save everyone labor expense and produce the best quality result. Get those pictures over to the rep and ask what materials(it's all stuff they make) are suggested and how much time they want to get it to you. Get their recommendation on the correct saw blade for a clean cut on that chipped panel. Forrest Blades is a likely source and it may be one of the fragile material blades depending on what that is.

You are correct, there are parts that need to be replaced. Our design firm has them on order with Ultracraft. They are also aware of the issue with the blades. I appreciate Ultracraft providing contact info and offering to help. We agreed to an action plan provided by our design firm yesterday and want to stick with it. We will reach out directly to Ultracraft if anything goes wrong but we are optimistic the issues will be corrected. Thanks again for everyone's feedback, it was extremely helpful. We will post pictures of the work after it is completed.

This is unacceptable. The paint should not be chipping off new cabinetry. A) do you have a warranty and B) did you make final payment?

In both these cases, you have leverage. The paint should stick to the cabinets and doors regardless of which part you are photographing. I'm not sure why it would peel but it doesn't really matter.

Call the company and ask for the owner. Your new kitchen should be perfect. That's what you paid for. Kitchen Magic kitchens come with a lifetime of homeownership warranty. Additionally, every kitchen project is inspected and signed off on.

The damaged cabinets and/or doors should be replaced. You should love your new kitchen and it should be perfect. Don't settle.

I don't know if it's just me but I'd like to see a few photos of the "good parts" of the kitchen. It's way too easy for the company to blame the installers ( who were obviously hacks) for everything but from what I see in the photos the finish looks like crap and I'm not talking about the botched areas. You should be keeping your 4k and be getting even more back on top of that. I can't manage seeing this that the rest of the kitchen is somehow perfect or even aceptable.
