"Expressing her feelings..." Was that the excuse? Omg. Maybe it's just me, and maybe because of how I was raised or maybe because I don't have kids of my own, but it seems like parents "these days" are a different breed than mine were.

I had a neighbour in the last place who had two boys. And one day I looked out the window and here is the eldest, maybe 12 at the time, perched up on top of the garage roof (steep 8/12 pitch, and nowhere soft to land if he fell -- fence on two sides and concrete on the other two). I called his dad and just said, hey don't know if you know this, but your kid is on the garage roof. His dad replied something to the effect of, yeah, we know... he's just finding ways to 'express himself...'. And this was perfectly okay with him.

Good grief. I was scared of the day he'd be 'expressing himself' on the way to the hospital in an ambulance.

SNL sketch from about 10 years ago....GET OFF THE SHED

When my son was about five, we went to a birthday party at one of those places where the kids all run around playing sports things or using the trampoline or whatever they wanted. One girl nearby was practically beating a boy up. No parent was telling her to stop so I said to her, "hey, stop hitting him like that." (I didn't yell, just said it.) She looked at me like I had two heads. A couple of minutes later, the mom (I guess) comes up to me and asked if there was a problem. Told her the girl was beating on the boy. "Oh, they were just playing. They do that all the time." Well I certainly don't want my kid thinking that is an appropriate way to play. Even though it was my neice's birthday "party" we ended up leaving, I was so shaken by the experience.

My second son was a ...... challenge. I could tell you stories that would make your hair curl. But I'm trying to forget.

That girl was still strung out from drugs ( court thing)..pretty sure...I agree...discipline is needed and lacking. I work daily with my little diablo...he does time outs, and it calms him down!

He looks possessed in this pic!! LOL...I have caught him on the roof, top of the camper, tops of trees, etc.
Jayme, I'm pretty much convinced they're all possessed.
jayme, please tell me everyone painted their face that day, not just diablo, lol.
No, but I probably had a wine mustache...LOL!!

Ugh. Now I'm on a tear about the roof. This went on for several years, this garage sitting thing. One week, the family was away and I went out to find three teenaged boys (16 or 17) sitting up there, buddies of the oldest. Since I was left in charge of keeping an eye on things while they were gone, I told them to get the hell down, and if I caught them up there again I'd just call the police and let them handle it. When the family came home, I told the mother about it and said you know, if one of those kids falls off that roof someone's going to sue you.... further to that I wasn't keen on the idea of pubescent boys with a clear view into my bedroom windows. Garage sitting ended finally, but I was just livid.

That would have gotten me beat, had it been my dad. A) dangerous and 2) for wrecking the shingles.

Goodness gracious, between this and the bedroom post I feel like I have read a couple of novels. I can't believe that bedroom post has been going on for 3 months. I had to laugh when the poster came in about starving people in the world, honestly it does put things into perspective and makes something like this a joke. How shallow can our lives become if something like this consumes your every moment as this dilemma seems to have with the poster.

How about an Aussie finally taking out the US Open too. Much excitement here.

Anyway, now I've had my bedtime stories, I'm hitting the sack.

Jayme, he's adorable! I get that boys like to climb, but good grief... it made my heart stop every time I saw it.
I would def get off that shed!
@kimdee..I don't blame u a bit!! I am always chasing him off of something..he's a wild one!! I do, however, recall shooting bottle rockets off our roof as a teenager...wonder where my son got it from? LOL
  • 13 years ago
jayme, he got it from the apples that fell off your tree, lol.
He is a wild little beast! I am after him all the time..just busy, busy, busy....he is now taking drum lessons and can beat the hell out of his drum set and wear off some energy! He also ice skates, rollerblades, bikes (in the snow), u name it!!
What cracks me up about teen boys is that whenever they walk thru a doorway, they have to jump and hit the top of the doorway. Why?
My 22 y/o old son, and my husband still do that sometimes...My 22 y/o fights and carries on with the 7 y/o as if they were BOTH 7 years old...Arrgghhh!!
bobbi, bobbi, bobbi...silly girl. Because it is there for the hitting!!
Oh yeah, that's what I pretty much figured :))

Bobbi - When I called the mall, they told me where the scooters were kept, and when I said I’d never make it that far from the door, they asked if someone could go get the scooter & bring it to me .. sure, my 91 year old aunt who’d never driven any kind of vehicle!

Oh, and when I went to A&P, they had scooters by the door .. all dead, because no one was responsible for checking that they were plugged in after use. When I told them afterwards, they said I should have come in to customer service to let them know .. duh, if I could walk to customer service, I wouldn’t have needed the scooter in the first place!

I honestly don’t think people walk this thru in their heads, when they’re planning for people with disabilities/injuries! Those kids & the wheel chairs .. I’d have handcuffed them to the chairs, and charged their parents $100 to retrieve them!

I have stock in Starbucks; I would have told the manager to do something, or I’d have their franchise “recalled” (maybe it would have scared someone).

Judy – Where did they get the bamboo sticks? Wonder who’s liable if one kid poked the other in the eye?! The store? (LOL)

Living Space – My Mom would have told me to get off the shed once, then branded me with a hot poker form the grill, if I didn’t listen! (not really, but it sure tells you her level of tolerance for bad behavior).

Judy, if you don't want to get emails on posts, click the unsubscribe at the bottom of each email. I usually let things run a bit, if I want to stay involved, but once a few weeks have gone by and things are just getting down to repeats I unsubscribe, to keep the emails down to a dull roar. When I come online, I generally go through, keep the first notification of a post and delete the rest. Mind you, once I have deleted all the repeat OLLDs, it looks much more civilized - hahaha. We sure can talk!!!
thanks, roo, I'll do that. 200+ e-mails is a little much. Some posts i just in my two cents and I don't care what happens in the end. A few others are interesting and I want to hear the final outcome.

judy - I just noticed at the bottom of the discussion thread you can opt out of notifications

My mother would come back from getting the mail from the mailbox and let me have the junk mail. As a toddler, it really made me feel special to have full color pictures of maytag appliances or credit card applications.
My son received a pre-approved credit thingy from Fingerhut - all he had to do was phone in his order. He was 11 years old!

Help with a yellow paint choice? East, South and West light. Having trouble. Thanks.
    Any particular brand?
What room judy? I like a yellow like this, what I call a custard yellow. I saw one the other day, that someone said was either BM Weston Flax or Hawthorne something.

Hawthorne is an awesome yellow! It is warm, but not heavy if that makes any sense?
It is hard to tell from photos when colours change so much, but I have used my Cowardly Custard in hallways with low light that it has brightened, one south facing horribly depressing bedroom that it warms and cheers and my kitchen/family room that face east and north where it looks really fresh and not at all warm.
Cowardly Custard? Where do they get these names? I want that job!
Well Houzz already did an ideas book on naming colours. I still can't get over my Puddle and Kangaroo Pouch.
I saw the other day that KitchenAid has a stand mixer in Pantone's color of the year - Emerald Green!
Uh oh..Now I have no excuse to not get one.
Handymam, do you like that color? It was really pretty on that stand mixer.
I am a big fan of green. So many shades of it. Moss green, apple green, the green when the leaves first come out...

I haven't seen the mixer, but I will look for it now!
My husband loves green, too, if it were up to him the whole house would be painted green.
R would love my house them, pretty much green in every room. My favourite colour.
I love green, but I like different colors depending on what the thing is I am choosing it for. I love so many colors when I go to the paint section, I come home with all the booklets of ideas and loads of paint chips. I keep them in a big envelope and use them to help colorless family and friends choose something other than off-white "because it goes with everything." LOL.
R's mothers house in Mexico is ALL green, inside and out. They paint it every year, the same color! He and his brothers affectionetly call it the jungle!
