Thanks, Sharon. Do you think the mirror to the right of the main cabinet is too heavy looking? Should I get rid of the piano? (We hardly ever use it, but it will take 5 very strong guys to lift it out). I really appreciate your help.:)

Your look is warm, homey...what do u think? There is a lot of wood..What do u want to get rid of?..many of your things are quite nice. I think the wicker adds texture.

I agree with Sharon and I would also remove the red chair with the black lamp. I think the piano add charm to the room. I would leave it there. I think the mirror is not too heavy looking.

Out house was built in 1867 and I'm really worried that the furniture doesn't look very current. I'm thinking about recovering the existing furniture, getting rid of curtains, mirror, replacing end tables and coffee tables... Getting rid of the piano? I'm grateful for any advice:)

I would get rid of the two coffee tables as they are very heavy looking and the wicker chair. and that tall white square lamp thing in the corner next to the mirror.I would take the things off the top of your wooden cabinet with the glass doors and the chair that is in the corner in front of the mirror. I think you have nice stuff there is just too much. I agree get rid of the red chair and black lamp next to it as just too much stuff in the room

Before you get rid of anything why not try peoples suggestions out, and post photos after trying suggestions and then we can comment.

I agree with several suggestions.Get rid of wicker chair,red chair and 2 floor lamps.Your pieces are nice.

Great ideas. I don't think you need a new rug...just some new toss pillows and colorful accessories. I would try this to update the look:
1. Center the rug with the FP and get a rectangular glass/metal frame coffee table.
2. Tighten the furniture up close to the coffee table centered with the FP.
3. Remove both of the the two short legged side tables and too small lamps.
4. Use one of the boxey tables (now used as a coffee table) as a side table between your matching chairs.
5. Remove the china hutch and put the piano there (or put the piano where the buffet is and the buffet on the wall behind the sofa.
6. Remove the mirror on the right of the china hutch (you already have a mirror above the FP)
7. Do not have a side table by the sofa, just put the floor lamp on the right side of the sofa.

You have most everything already for a beatiful space. Editing a few choice pillows and accessories will be just right.

Could you post pics of the other two walls ? ... so that we can see both the window wall and the wall with the entrance door. Do you also have a pic of the faded rug that you're intending to use ? You have some nice furniture, but, as others have mentioned, rather too much for one room. There are certainly pieces that you could reupholster and reuse for a "little less traditional" feel. I think you need to be sure of the replacement rug so that you can get an idea of what colors you'll be using and then decide what stays and what goes.
