Garden Soil Types

last modified: 9 years ago

We have 3 gardens that are close by each other. 2 of them run north to south with a very gentle slope of about 1 to 2 percent. The other garden runs east to west with no discernible slope.

One n/s garden is 70 feet long and the other is 45 feet long. In both these gardens the soil starts a lighter color and is medium dark mid-way to very dark colored at the lower end.

On my county's soil map, I can see that I have one soil type [Blount] with the lighter soil and Pewamo or maybe a bit of Brookston on the lower end. The one is silt loam and the heavier soil is silty clay loam. I had guessed the heavier type about right, but had thought that the lighter soil was clay loam rather than silt loam.

Anyway I have highly amended these soils so that now they are a unique type now...sandy, muck, silty clay loam...great soil.

Anyone else know what their native soil is?
