I don't think it does the painting any favors. I'd be tempted to choose a simple, black frame.

i agree, but would like to put a caveat in there. many paintings removed from original frame detracts from value.

also black is an automatic go to, but I often find that different colors can bring out whole different aspects in the painting. that was the purpose of this frame. perhaps if it was cleaned it would look better. otherwise play with the frames, my auto would be red, but green might be better or your might like another better.

I have a few paintings framed like that. Unless the frame brings out the best in the painting (which yours doesn't) get rid of it. The depth/profile/color of the frame aren't what your art needs. I too would go for black, to pick up the black in the art. But I'd just take it to a real frame shop and get some advice.

You cant frame a picture on Houzz. Take it to a good framer in your area, pop it out of the existing frame, and there will be many molding options to play with on site and before a final decision. You frame to the picture..... if your eye is drawn right into the composition, you have the right frame. The frame is the enhancer, not the star of the show, and not a shadowy understudy either. Best done locally in any scenario.

Ask your local framer to show you samples of floater frames like the one I suggested in my rendering above. They will have different thicknesses and colors and you can try them out with you art. This is a closer look at what a floater frame looks like. :)

I agree a floater frame would be great , and as for value IMO a good frame on a good piece of art enhances the value that frame is a mess

If you don't want to go to the expense of a new frame it could easily be painted. Depends upon it's value , gallery quality?

Love the floater frames....just be sure that your painting isn't somehow damaged around its perimeter from being in the old frame. Damage might show in a floater.

I was also going to say what Bailey R suggested. Try painting the old frame.

I was going to suggest a black floating frame (really, I was!!!) and it's what I have for most of our artwork, but he beat me to it!
Your current frame isn't "horrible", but certainly could be improved upon.

Thanks all. Well, I've come to think something needs to be done to it. I do like the black frame a lot. The thing about the frame is that it's not dirty at all it just looks like it lol.

I will try the diy route first. I see if I have something in the house I could use(it's not a heartbreak if I ruin the frame!).

I found some oil pastels(not ideal lol) and colored the frame a grayish color. It can do for a while. I probably will look into the black frame in the future. The room is a tiny extra bedroom and I sort of put everything there that doesn't fit elsewhere, so it's not particularly serious. The pics are poor but all I can manage

You are absolutely correct I'm trying to take pics with my phone in this tiny room, maybe panorama gives better idea...I'm going to change the floor and the rug is too small as well...

Pano pix distort room and furniture sizes and proportion. Instead, take a standard photo of each corner of the room by standing in the opposite corner and shooting across the room.

I like Mark's floater frame, but I'm kind of grooving on your funky frame. You won't see that in a model home tour or maybe anywhere else. It gives the art an added depth and continuation.

Heads up: coloring with oil pastels will make painting the existing frame a bit more of a task should you decide to reuse the current frame. Additionally, the colorant will smudge or rub off unless a fixative is used, so be mindful when moving, handling.

It would emphasize your painting if you would lower it over the white cabinet. Go just 6 inches over the dresser.

Try putting the plant on the floor or getting a smaller one for that spot.

A taller lamp would also work with the painting.

Tems, although I'm not usually a fan of ornate frames, in this case I find it goes rather well with the painting. The overal effect is a naive Scandinavian country look, which has its merits. I wouldn't go modern and black here. :)

Babophz I was starting to think that as well. The black floater frame is too razor sharp style for this silly room, though I do love it. Your characterization is great, I really don't mind the naive and a touch of country ;).

This room is adorable. Love the art and the bedding. The only thing I'd do here is move the rug to the other side to meet the tootsies first thing.
