Mantle help

1 - where can I get a longer, rustic shelf? I feel like this one is too short

2 - My husband will not let me paint or deface the mantle in any way. What can I do to make it not such an eyesore? We do not want a different screen.

3 - how should I decorate it? I'm not loving the current situation

Personally I like the brick as is, so I wouldn't paint it in any case. I also like the black metal accessories.

I'd go to a place that sells reclaimed lumber and get a large beam, about 8-10" thick, to span the width of the brick. See how that looks before accessorizing it. The mirror doesn't really add anything, neither do the candles.

if you use the items on the hearth, then keep them, but if not remove them. Less is more.

Well I would totally desecrate it and paint the brick. You would probably have to replace the husband. Yes, the mantle needs to be much longer.

Check out reclaimed wood in your area for a larger mantel which i agree would be a good idea. The one you have has a very formal feel to it with the way the edges are finished just keep the new one plain.. I don’t think the piece you have there is the right scale , I love the hearth and how you have done it . Maybe take the mantel off and see if you could go without one

I had a woodworker create a chunky mantle spanning the width of my fireplace.... made a huge difference.

When you have you beautiful new mantle installed, you might consider three pieces of art, like this. I've given you the same Matisse image three times because I can. Having a bit of a romance with the artist at the moment. Anyway, I think it's fun and light-hearted, and I think the fireplace can do with a bit of lightness.
