Why would you paint it grey? Why not stain to match cabinets?

I really don't like dark cabinets. They are currently oak just like the cabinets. If I really like it I may paint the cabinets gray also.

Hi sdwolk, I meant darker grey for your island which was one fo the three option you were looking into. If you are planning to paint all of your cabinets I would go lighter to keep a contrast with your counters.

I would paint it. Dark gray BM Kendall Charcoal. Or maybe a dark sage green like BM HC106 Crownsville Gray or HC 112 Tate Olive. The gray/greens work well with oak honey tones. Nice job btw!

What about painting it same color as trim in the hallway...

Or Hale Navy:) Just because I think it looks good with bright whites and grays...like your counter but also looks lovely with warm tones of wood. Probably bolder than what you were thinking...just throwing it out there.

I DO really like the photo you posted above! That Hale blue with the gray & white is gorgeous! The other problem is my kitchen, dinning room, and livingroom is open concept and is all sage green with 22 foot cathedral ceilings so it would involve a professional painter = $$$$.

I love the idea of painting your cabinets light grey. It seems that would really lighten your kitchen up. the navy on the island would look great with light grey cabinets. don't worry about the wall in the other rooms, you will end up repainting in a couple of years anyway. Enjoy!

I am a big fan of Navy blues, but if you have greens in the adjoining room, you will need to integrate that look to be happy until you repaint. It can be done with pillows that have both colors, and other accessories. Just think about that.

Sdwolk. Maybe white is best then due to open concept...how would you combine gray island with open concept sage green...

Kjoy1, I think the gray green may be okay because this is the area carpet in the living and dinning room.

May be okay with the hale navy also?

I think the Hale Navy can work with just a few additional accessories to bring things together. Not a big problem.

Galveston Gray BM would look great with your quartz marble and oak...

I'm a dissenter, I think:). It seems that you kitchen doesn't get much natural light. Maybe paint entire island white to match all of you trim. You could easily accent with that and change later.

I agree maybe a dark charcoal would work well. Perhaps Kendall?

Wow Kjoy1! Your suggestions are amazing!! I really like the Galveston Grey also! Don't know how you got the Galveston Grey to show up on my island but I'm so glad you did. It really helped me to envision it all.... Gosh I like the Hale Navy and the Galveston Grey!! I'm almost thinking that the Galveston Grey goes better with my decor for now. Anyway to put the Hale Navy on my island?? Anyway you can come over and help me paint also...lol...

I use photoshop...but if I tried to paint your cabinets it would just look like gray blobs...because honestly I am pretty clumsy at it. I honestly like the Galveston Gray with your oak cabinets...and think it combines well with the old and the new:)

Anyone can use photoshop...not very user friendly. I downloaded an app on my iPad. Ha! I wish I was an interior designer!!! Full time Mom...very part time nurse. Love looking at beautiful things:) Can empathize with you because I have oak cabinets. Often struggle with the reasons I chose oak cabinets in the first place... because my mom has oak cabinets and my grandma had oak cabinets...and trying to stay on trend. I think you did an excellent job updating your kitchen with oak cabinets. Sometimes it makes me sick to my stomach that I might have to paint my cabinets or change my countertop every 10 years just to stay on trend;) Don't waver...you are doing a good job!

Aww, thanks! Happy to hear you like what I've done so far. Well, I am going on 64 yrs old so I figure I may as well paint the cabinets if I have an inkling to do so. I will be happy if I make another ten years to 74. So do I really care if I make a mistake...not really...I can always move if I absolutely hate it. That will give me a good reason to purge everything anyway! Full time mom huh? Tough job but make sure you stay up on your Continuing Ed credits. Never know when you might need a career. Having been divorced, an education, would have come in handy. Anyway, I'll go check out light room. Thanks again!!

If you paint the island, do it all in one color. Otherwise, it will look chopped up. Keep the color on the walls consistent with whatever color you use on the island but with your oak, a gray/blue in the same family as what you use on the island would be nice.

Thanks Flo! I'm still unsure of just what to do so any and all info from a pro is greatly appreciated. So nice to be informed and have choices! This is the paint colors that are part of the open concept of my living, dinningroom and kitchen. So you can see there is a lot of green and tan. All are warm tones that went with the oak. That was all painted five years ago but color and kitchens changed drastically since then so I'm trying to make the best of an outdated situation. Thoughts now that you see the picture?

I think I would do a deep sage green. While I love using dark blue for your space it would be a disconnect unless you repaint all your green walls. If you do decide to paint everything the dark blue island with whites would be my choice I think. That might require changing wall hangings and accessories too. Are you up for that?

No, guess not. Here's a photo of the island my husband just painted with grey primer. Is it too out of place using gray like Kjoy1 suggested? I kinda liked those 2 she posted? They seem go have some green in them, especially the Galveston grey one.

I don't think it looks out of place. On my monitor, it has some green in it.

I honestly believe I need to have atleast the green walls repainted to a more neutral gray because I don't want to have to continually work around it.

You are probably right. I would also "edit" some of the "things" in the space to make it feel lighter and cleaner. I would remove the hanging plant over that upper railing and the lovely, but tapestry or piece hanging over that same railing. That piece might be nice hanging from a rod as a wall hanging. I would remove the mirror over the TV and the painting beside it. These things just darken the space.
